I just did a search for gifts,( business gifts, etc. many iterations) I got many hits, except Section 274, which is what I was looking for.

did you actually read §274? or were you expecting other to try to disguise entertainment expenses as 'gifts' and say so in the discussion? Perhaps no one asked your exact question yet.

It's in there - probably all depends what areas you searched and how many "views" you asked for. In this particular search, it's #62 of the content matches: Search IRC only for GIFTS.

Since the Section title doesn't include the actual word GIFTS it won't show up in the top part, where it's title matches only.

And since the search results are listed chronologically, for the most part, and Sec. 274 was apparently loaded later than other sections with that word, it's lower down on the list.

Or, if you have your search preferences (see "preferences" link, top right of page, second tab from the right) set to exclude the IRC pages, it won't show up no matter what! You can look at the very bottom of the search results to check whether or not the results have been limited - there should be a check next to "Internal Revenue Code" if you'd like TA to search those pages along with any other areas that are checked.

More to the point:

  • If you know the section you want, you can just put "Sec. 274" (without the quotes) into the search box and it'll jump you right to that page. Or go through the research resources link on the left upper side of the page, to Internal Revenue Code, and click through from there (takes a lot longer that way!).
  • If your only search term was GIFTS without any other word, you're going to get a mess of mainly unusable results. Better to have added another relevant word or two once you realized that you got too many hits the first time.
(If you did search on "business gifts" (without the quotes), then if you limited the search to the IRC, Sec. 274 is #14 in the Search IRC for business gifts, but if you didn't limit to IRC only, you would still have gotten a zillion responses, e.g., Sec. 274 is #15 on this search, but there are nearly 400 hits overall!!)

But thanks for letting us know, as it always does help to see how others are searching and what their reaction is to what they get.
