another ? about consumer forum
I understand that anyone viewing ALL discussions will see them. Is the intention then that anyone just viewing TAX or ACCOUNTING will not see them, and will only see them if viewing ALL: i.e. there will be no direct link to that forum? I suppose once someone views a Consumer Discussion question the category should let them know that it is a consumer question. Kevinh5
Consumer forum
We don't want to solicit consumer questions, and we don't need to make it easy for non-pros to get through the 'system', but how will Tax Pros know they are answering a consumer question if they aren't looking in a special forum? And if a non-pro doesn't bookmark his page, how will he find his discussion 3 days later? You know how some of us hate repeat questions. Kevinh5
Thanks
Tim,
Thanks for your hard work. We appreciate it.
These changes you made are very helpful. Thanks again.

Sorting search results
Hey Tim, since I know you're reading...and this has probably been asked before, but is there a way to sort the search results so that they're sorted by most recent POSTS and not by the thread date? And of course, if the most recent could be at the top instead of the bottom...but don't know what limits you have because of Wiki. Thanks, Jeff
Thanks for the template instructions
yes, Trillium and I have spent more time than we thought to do some preliminaries, but I can see that it is alredy improving people's attitudes. Kevinh5
HI, those copyright violation threads
were all part of the issue I had with Lance Wallach. I thought they were more spam than anything, but they had all been posted as appearing in various accounting trade journals. Kevinh5

And thanks for the template suggestion, too (and the link clean-up). Are the internal links more efficient from a processing standpoint, or just part of a philosophy of keeping things (like code) clean? ...Trillium
Consumer Chat Q
Interesting - I'd thought you'd used that "start a new chat discussion" wording on purpose, to provide a subtle reinforcement that the consumer forum wasn't a source of free tax advice for consumers, but rather a place where their questions go when they're not appropriate elsewhere - after which "chats" about the questions might take place! I guess I read a lot into one extraneous word, didn't I? ...Trillium
The mouse-over balloons on the topics column of the main list page isn't very useful because the width of that column adjusts to fit all of that field's content. If the width were restricted the balloons would be useful and there would be more room for another column such as the forum in which a discussion was posted. The same could be done for the Creator and Last Poster columns. What do you think? -- Larry Hess, CPA | Albuquerque, NM

Thanks for providing us an opporteunity to talk with other professionals. IS there anyway to include a spreadsheet in the field? It would make explaining some of the fact patterns much easier.

Pubs
As you probably figured out, I started at the bottom of the list and I'm working up. The ones that I didn't edit along the way were checked; they have appropriate (current) overviews and links. So - if you have somebody else work on this, too, maybe have them start from the top and work down. I'm just doing it on and off - when my workload is light and my mood is right. They'll probably beat me to the middle.
FYI, there have been a few so far that are no longer active pubs (discontinued/replaced). You indicated that it's important to maintain the pages since they are linked from the various intuit software programs, so I've simply noted that they're outdated, and provided links to the current info (if any).

Strange occurance re logging in
Hi Tim, I was in the consumer forum (not yet logged in) and clicked on a particular user name to check the profile.....and all of a sudden, I WAS logged in without ever typing my password in. Only happened with that user name (Ashing - the thread had to do with Code 14 on a W-2). I tried other names in the same thread without it happening; I tried other threads with different user names without it happening. That thread is the only one she's contributed to. Seems very odd - not sure it's a problem; but thought you might want to know.Belle 16:45, 20 January 2009 (CST)
How many User Names may be created per IP address?
We have noticed that one person has had at least 4 different names. We think that he keeps changing his user name every time he wears out his welcome. Is this tracked by IP address? Thank you, Kevinh5

Stealth editing
Tim, FYI: A couple of forums don’t actually have stealth editing enabled – chat, tax tips, and feedback. I suppose it’s not so important on those forums if the edits change the order of the discussions, but I’ve ended up with a couple of the discussions out of order (technically) in trying to get the name of the spammer out of the “last poster” field. Nothing that won’t be resolved once the actual last posts are days old rather than hours old, but I figured I’d mention it in case you want to make the editing treatment consistent. - Trillium

Rev Rul 59-162
T Doyle,
I am trying to locate Revenue Ruling 59-162. Twice, (once from within TaxAlmanac) I have been directed a website called TaxLinks.com, but each time, I got the message saying it was no longer an active site - or something to that effect. Can you help ?
I am a recent new visitor to your site - it is fantastic.

Flat tax? Need to worry?
Hi,
I didn't know if you would be interested in the dialogue on this thread. A couple of people are really rude, calling each other and their comments names. It seems contrary to our code to me. It is amazing how combative and juvenile "professionals" can be. I was going to post simply "be nice", but nothing good is going to come from me inserting myself into the muck. The ball is in your court and I will know not to revisit that thread.

Ohio medical cost tax deduction
I'm a practice in GA, but have few OH clients. I'm having trouble understanding this tax deduction and I'm not sure my software (Lacerte) is calculating correctly.
As I understand it, there should be a deduction for unsubsidized health insurance and Long-term care insurance without limitation. Lacerte includes these costs in total medical and limits to the amount in excess of 7.5%.
Either I don't understand, I'm inputting incorrectly or the software has a glitch.
Can you shed any light? Thanks so much
Hi Tim,
I had a post on tax practice several days ago. The great almanac users responded and one of the suggestions was to create a "tax practice" section. It looks like you've done that and I wanted to know how to map the "tax" discussion to the new area. Thank you!

SBWOTA
I was looking at Tax Acts that have not been merged into the Code. The legislative text, under the Small Business and Work Opportunity Tax Act of 2007 seems to be merely the Senate finance bill. I think the final bill was HR 2206.
The reason i noticed this was that the legislative text you have used did not include the changes to te kiddie tax and the bill sections do not line up with the technical explanations.

How to navigate and ask a tax question
I have used TaxAlmanac before but I am finding it very difficult to find the venue where I can ask a tax question. I went through the process of 'Ask a Tax Question' but in the process I am told to create a profile, which I have already done, but the instructions just stop at that point in directing me any further. I need help. Thank you. Even this email, to you, does not have a 'submit' button.
change user name
Hello, I just created an account, so that I could ask a question. My first answer was annoyance with my user name, so I would like to change it, because it was not my intention to annoy anyone.
How about: Sharon? Sharon1221? If neither of those work, you can pick some numbers to put after Sharon.
I can't think of anything else at the moment. I made my user name what first popped into my head.
Name chg request from Sharon
Hi, Tim - I think the name change request just above this message has been handled already (Sharon1221 has been newly created), and I left a note on the (original) user's talk page to confirm. At this point, I don't think there's a name change needed. Will keep you posted. (BTW, I never heard back from that other guy who wanted to change from one long user name to another - he may have just created a new shorter name on his own, too.)

Private Letter Rulings
Tim... I was just looking at your community portal info. I happen to have a copy of a private letter ruling that addresses extra duty by Honolulu PD officers. We here use this to justify not having to do a Sch C or SE forms. The ruling came about because HPD does not withhold SE taxes and the officers do special duty for private companies. The argument was that since the officers are sanctioned by HPD for this work, and because they are required to be in uniform and use their duty vehicles this is an extension of their job and SE should not apply. The questioned was asked of the IRS by HPD. I am not at my business computer at the moment. I will post it, if I can figure out how, in the morning. When my workload slows down I would be happy to do what I can to help. I could start by posting the IRS Newsletters as I get them. (Also have several on file). How do I post them? Do I just copy the email I get and post it? Will it maintain the link to the IRS site via the copy and paste? Is that what you want? Let me know. Laura (taxea)
Link Registration and login page to Profile
Tom I just had another thought. Can the program be set up so that new users are linked directly to their profile page and put an * on lines they would be required to fill-in. I was thinking just the lines that would be helpful in determining their level of expertise...they could still keep anything private that they want to.
It would work so that whenever they log in they as soon as they entered their login info the program would take them directly to the profile page with a notification that they will not be able to post until the "*" lines are filled in.

Pistachios
Hi Tim,
Yes, doing fine now. Thanks for asking. I've done the worm thing, but that was in the tequila. lol. I'm thinking it was some kind of mold <which I am allergic to> on one of the rotten pistachios. Tao <Tom> left a good link about some kind of mould issue with stachios and that kind of looks like what I had.
Anyway, allergist found nothing and was told to get a full work up by my doctor, that will wait til after tax season.

Would you please change my username from: Btemerowski, to BrendaT?

Brenda's name change has been done
Hi, Tim - The name change that Brenda requested, just above, has been made. The earlier name change request from Lskeys is, I believe, moot; I'd sent him a note suggesting a shorter "new" name, and not long after that he set up with a new ID instead. Also, Scottycoyote's issues with editing his user page turned out to be the same as what Genskitty was experiencing last spring, and he fixed it the same way she did, by unchecking the "use external editor" preference. The other intervening requests I'll leave for you; picture files are outside the scope of my wiki knowledge!

Search terms
Hi there,
Thank you for having this site. It is wonderful.
I know this is easier said than done. But is there a way we can make the search button more friendly? i.e. I needed to look up 'foreign income exclusion' but I wasn't aware of the terminology at the time. Thus,I entered 'overseas income' and nothing came up. Then I tried a bunch of other words and nothing showed up. It seems like we have to have the exact words or the thread won't come up.
Any ideas?

Suggestion
Hello,
I am impressed with the quality of this huge network. I just became a member and I have learned many wonderful things. Thank you for your dedication in bringing this shared point of information available to us.
I posted a genuine question asking for a checklist or suggestions from seasoned professionales to some one being proactive and wanting to learn from them. So far twelve plus responses but just one or two are meaningful.
Although I like jokes I do not appreciate that it goes on. It seems like the idea is just to increase the number of postings regardless of how useful they are.
My suggestion is that the responses with sarcastic content or meaningless jokes be limited. I find disrespectful that someone tells me to get a bikini wax if I want to start and accounting practice.
Thank you so much for this great forum and I hope you find my positive criticism objective and useful to our discussion forums.
Best regards.
