I am a long-time CPA and a fairly new tax professional (couple of years now). My background was primarily in corporate accounting/mgt, and before that, audit, but that public accounting stint was long, long ago. I'm slowly building my experience as a paid tax preparer, and I also have years of history as a free tax preparer, out of familial obligation – and have managed to resolve some fairly complex situations in that context. I've happily confirmed that my prior tax and acctg experience translates well to adding value for my paying tax clients as well.
Also, toward the end of 2008, Tim Doyle recruited me to help out with various administrative (background) activities on the TaxAlmanac site, along with Kevinh5.
