| I am newly starting off as a sole practitioner and was wondering if anyone has recommendations on tax projection software. In the past I have used BNA Tax Planner but know that it is very expensive. I am currently using Lacerte tax software and know that they have a program called "Tax Planner".
Does anyone have an opinion on Lacerte's "Tax Planner" or opinions on any other projection software available that won't break my bank account in my first year?

| The Tax Planner is a good program for the price. There are some things to watch out for so with out being specific do not just take the results for granted. It certainly converts the current year data into the program correctly. | |

| I use INTUIT Proseries. I have worked in firms that used BNA etc... here's what I do.
I take the current file and save it as a projection file. So in theory, the client file is in my program twice. I then make the changes to the projection return based on NEXT year assumptions. I have NOT had many problems with this that a high priced program would solve. When my projection is off, "It aint the software", it me.

| If you are in California or New York, Tax Tools (by CFS Software) has a good and inexpensive planner. | |

| Be sure to check out Tax Planning using Lacerte Tax Planner from the archives.
There are other discussions, too, search “tax planner”, but really the responses you've gotten above are a pretty good representation of what people have said in the past about Tax Planner software/ tax projection tools in general. Note that this search is limited to the discussions in the Business Growth/Practice Management forum, where the majority of the software questions are (…er, or are meant to be), but you might want to search again without that limiter in case there are related discussions in the other forums.

| I will second CFS taxtools it is simple and inexpensive. I don't feel the need to get too detailed with tax projections, they are just estimates. | |
