| Hello to All,
My name is Dave at taxproadvantage.com. I am starting a new tax preparation service in the Metro Detroit Area. I am an accounting major, I have passed the CPA Exam, however have never been in public practice. I have recently reired from a 30 year career, plus 25 years managing a family restaurant. I am now free to pursue other interests. I have established my firm and I'm ready to begin marketing and establishing pricing for the 2009 tax season. Any advise on these topics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks | |

| One piece of advice for a new practice would be to know your limits. I would try to hook up with a more experienced preparer and refer work to her/him if it were beyond my experience. In return, they might refer clients to you that are too small or need some hand holding. In return for the referrals, they can be a good sounding board when you need a second opinion.
One of the best pieces of advice I got starting out was a paying client is a good client, meaning if you don't get paid, it doesn't matter how prestigious they are or how many hours you billed, they aren't a good client. Keep the billing timely and prompt and get paid as you go. | |

| Thanks for the responses. To Eastern PA, 1040, 1120S, 1065. I have used Pro Series for many years. I am switching to Refunds Today to take advantage of instant refunds. The business was aggrevation but also a passion. I kinda miss it, but I'm looking forward to a new challenge. I plan to stick to individual and small business. This were my expertise lies. | I'd focus on your strengths in the restaurant business. Do your homework on tax issues applicable to the restaurant business. Develop a thorough tax competency in this area. Talk to other restaurant owners about your new venture and how you understand for the business side and the tax. Give talks to your local restaurant association. This could be your long term golden niche.
