| + | get vaccinated is what I tell everyone if you can. I started having back pain, I walked 2 miles a day at night so I thought I had a pulled muscle. Then 4 days later I was vomiting and the pain went to my belly straight through my back, but only on my right side. Went to a walk in medical center and they thought it was a kidney stone. Put me on muscle relaxers, oxycodone and said it would pass. 2 days later I had a rash only on my right side. Went back for more drugs; the pain was not better and I didn't pass anything that I could see at least. Gave me a few more drugs and said they did not know what was wrong with me. | ||

| + | 2 days later I had raised bumps on my tummy and back. Still to this day I only got 5 of them. they itched but the pain was inside my body. went to new doctor she looked and said it is shingles. Put me on antivirals. every four hours around the clock for 10 days. she scared me if I missed a dose, the virus could attack another nerve. It is one nerve and only one side of my body but since it did not go away, it is the PHN. I am weak as a kitten, can't wear clothes to speak of ....hehehe by bf likes that one but even having the bedsheet touch me is horrible pain | ||

| + | yes shingles can come back but only in a small % of persons, so no need to get vaccinated now she says. but if you have had chickenpox in your life you can get shingles. wherever it leaves your skin it attaches to the spinal cord and comes back in that place. the shooting pain makes me scream. here i had 8 children and labor has nothing on this. | ||

| Hey all
What a roller coaster this year. My thanks to all and my missing fun times I am a youngster (well not really) but have been suffering from what we think is old age disease...I have shingles and believe me when David Letterman says it hurts more than bleep, bleep bleep. I am trying to work and also am trying to reduce stress....doctor says that stress is number one cause of shingles in my age group. Drugs are a blessed relief but of course also reduce your thinking somewhat. Percocet, ambien, neurontin and flexiril all make it a bit hard to concentrate but I want you to know that when this goes away (she promises me it will...could be weeks, already done that...could be months....into that now....could be years...NO WAY) I will be back. Miss you guys! And whining to boot, no? Sandy

| Hi Sandy, a lot of my older (55+) clients have been getting this. I think there is even a vaccine out now to reduce the chances of getting it. I hear it is awful. Every hear of an oatmeal bath? | |

| Get well soon, Sandy! Be sure to drop by when your desperate for comic relief. We got here plenty to spare.
Speaking of which - our shed needed to be re-shingled. So I decided to DIU it. I was half-way thru when I lifted a bundle. Wham!! I was a out for a month with a pulled back. I was hobbling like a really old man and I had to listen to DW, who had recommended that I get a handy man to do it.

| wow kevin...older? I am 51 years young come Jan. me thinks you are a baby.
the pain is not from the shingles themselves but the nerve pain. shingles are gone almost now they say post herpetic neuropathy i say go away shingles...heard a joke about it with bubba and shingles like PA said vaccine is for those 60 and older more prevalent now in younger generations

| Never had shingles...I understand that they are a later manifestation of chicken ox? Anyway, I second the recommendation of the oatmeal bath. I had hives for eight long months. Avenu made the oatmeal bath "salts" but there are generics out there, too. Very ssothing. | |

| Sandy, my sympathies. I contracted shingles earlier this year just as the tax season was starting. Doctor prescribed Gabopentin, which is a medication specifically for the nerve problems associated with shingles. You're right they are incredibly painful, mine lasted about three months and I'm afraid there is some residual nerve damage in a couple spots - more of an annoyance than anything else. But I did insist on getting the vaccination Kevin mentioned - I never want to deal with that again. They are a result of chicken pox as NMex says, but the amazing thing is my mom always told me I never had them. I know in my memory that I never had them, but I guess when I was a baby my brothers brought them home. The doctor said I probably just had a very light case and it could have been misconstrued by a mother as teething or something at the time. Anyway, good luck, and at least it's not tax season. I think one of the hardest things to do was take a medication that you know affects your ability to concentrate, then try to compensate for it. It's really tiring. | |

| Yeah action neurontin is the gabapentin. very loopy headed and the nerve pain is what hurts. stress brings the pox back dr says but me too never want it again | |

| "doctor says that stress" With the clients you write about, I wonder why!!!!!
Get better, kid. I think I was 58, and in the fall of that year after the death of my wife in June, I came down with what a nurse friend termed Non-STD Herpes, which she said was quite common. She mentioned that the first onset of it would be the worst. But it did allow me to write one of my all-time favorite monologues, The Procrastinator's Ball. http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/264537-THE-PROCRASTINATORS-BALL

| It is true that shingles starts/feels like chicken pox but what Sandy is dealing with is nothing like chicken pox. So oatmeal baths are not the solution. Once the scabs/pox go away, you are left with excruciating pain from nerve damage. So while you while you look like you are over it, it is a long haul back. My thought are with her and all shingle sufferers. | |

| So sorry to hear about this, Sandy. My mother had it when she was younger than I am now, and it certainly was miserable. Must remember to get that vaccination! | |

| Sandy, I'm sure everyone has shared with you a remedy or two for your malady. I've had a lot of luck with witchdoctors. Every time I go to see my "real" doctor, he's in his office talking to some pharmaceutical salesman or saleswoman. The doctor has forgotten what medicine is. When these hotshot salesmen drive up (and a lot of them are young ladies), the nurses run out and greet them, rush them back to the doctor's office, and generally give them the red carpet treatment; while they push the patients out of the way, even if they're dying.
If you'll notice, these new age drug pushers are dressed to kill. One drug lady I passed in my doctor's office was carrying a handbag that was worth more than my car. Then again, I've never met a con man that wasn't well dressed (or thought he was, anyway). No sir. Give me a witchdoctor any day. If you're still in Florida, drive down to Miami and put the word out for a voodoo priest. They treat like with like, so she'll probably have a chicken dance the Macarena over where your lesions were, and that will be the end of it. When you get back home, find one of the voodoo pharmacies online, and start keeping the spirits away so you won't be bothered in the future.

| Sandy - eeeewwwwwwwwww - bad news. So sorry to hear about your suffering. I've know people with shingles and they've all described the intensity of the pain involved. One guy couldn't work for six months ('course we know it couldn't keep YOU down for six months.)
I don't understand the vaccination tho - if you've had shingles, you still need to get it? Meaning that you have to get it yearly, just like the flu vaccination? Don't know why I thought it would be a one-time thing. Paula - now you have me scared. My family stories tell of my Mom sending me off to play with all the kids with chicken pox so I would get it; but I never did come down with case of them. Supposedly. But with your story, perhaps I did have a light case. Guess I better start looking for that vaccination before tax season gets here.

| Sandysea - best wishes for a successful continuing recovery. And thank you for sharing - you may save some of us in the over 60 set a lot of pain with the reminder to get the vaccination.
Death&Taxes - that is a great monologue. Do you think the stress from Ms. Lazlo brought on your medical event? (Of all the accounting firms in all the towns in all the world, she had to walk into yours . . .)

| Belle, you are only supposed to need the vaccination once, not like the annual flu shot. When I had shingles, several clients mentioned they had someone in the family who had repeat episodes, so I really wanted the shot so I can ensure that I don't go through it again. The nerve pain is incredible and you simply can't stand to have anyone touch you. Get thee to the doctor and demand the vaccination!!!
And BTW, I know that when I was growing up, people did what your mom did so they could "plan" for the eventual illnesses on their own terms. When my son was little, I think people still did, but we had a babysitter who starting watching him when he was about 2 and the family was still mourning the loss of their little six year old daughter. She contracted chicken pox and died from encephalitis, which is a complication of the disease. I decided right then that any vaccination I could get him was worth way more to me than losing him. I think of that every time I hear a parent panning the need for vaccinations for kids nowadays.
