A and B are unmarried co-owners and cohabitants. A wrote a check for $2000 each month to B. Then B wrote a check for $2,100 to the mortgage company. If B agrees not to deduct any mortgage interest, can A deduct some of all of the interest?

This seems to be a common scenario but I could find a relevant discussion.

As far as I know, there is nothing in the memo. The statute, regs and publication say "paid" but offer no detail on what "paid" means.
