I still have 154 returns more to go to reach my goal to be even with last year. I don't think there are 154 more returns in the pipeline for me to do this year.  :(

I just need 20 more to meet my goal. I don't think there are 20 more returns out there.

I've had 16 returns dropped off since yesterday morning, so the slow time I've had in the last 2 to 3 weeks has finally ended. Had about 70 March clients bring their stuff in early February this year. This is the first year in 35 years that I've been caught up before April 15th (except for a couple of days last year during one week in March).

I expect I'll end up doing a few more than the 653 I did last year (down from 686 the year before). That means I still have at least 106 more returns to do (to be even with last year), including the 18 that are here now in the to-do and pending baskets. I estimate I've lost about 150 clients to Turbo Tax in the last few years and many more than that due to death over the 35 years.

I just billed last night and overall, I'm down about $2,000 from last year. I still have some more complicated personal returns in the hopper, but over all this year is going to be less than last year.

Call the newspaper and run this ad real quick. True, you may attract the fruitcakes, but they pay too:

"LAST CHANCE FOR REFUND: According to the Mayan calendar, the world will end in 2012. This leaves you, the consumer, with just 3 more vacations to your name! Now, how do you pay for vacations? YOUR REFUND. Therefore, get your tax return here, right here...before we reach the point of NO RETURN. Your friendly (and qualified) tax preparer: Mr/Mrs/Ms. X."

I grant ever one permission to use this if they want to.

Crow, I might just use that ad. Or I Mayan not.

Use it. I think it might pass muster if used in the right tongue in cheek context, alternative newspaper etc. I actually think it would go over pretty well in something like Creative Loafing.

If the Service says anything about it, which they won't, but if they did, I say: compliance, this is a compiance gold mine.

Now, as an alternative to the above ad, for those who might owe tax, put in this line: "Come in from the Cold errant taxpayers! 2012 is here, and you might not be! This is a chance to come clean and file your taxes before the world ends. Why? You'll never have to actually 'pay' them! Call etc. etc."

At Fort Jackson in His Majesty's army service in 1968, we would walk about the Finance and Accounting office and shout out our days: "42" and someone would reply '19.' The shortest of the short-timers would wear a special 'short timers' badge. I ETSed 9/288/68 but never got to wear it since someone else got out the 26th and I was off that week, using up leave. 2/3rds of the staff were civilians, GSA 3-4-5s, and they would get amused.

Who could see the light at the end of the tunnel? I can, Yea!!! Starting April 17th I'm taking 8 solid weeks off, then I'm headed back to the office to work on extensions and any IRS Letters that will appear in the off season.

Kevin, how are you doing with your 154 return goal to be even with last year?

Kevinh5 (talk|edits) said:

I am now 29 from the goal. I only have 2 or 3 more in-house, so I doubt I'll make it.

I'm pulling a lot less # then I was at HR Block. I miss the marketing machine. Gross is down, but my % is much bigger.

Deback, is that your personal total? Wow. My personal best was about a third of that.

Genskitty (talk|edits) said:

April 13, 2009
Deback, I could only aspire to have that many returns.

TinCook, I will also have only about a 1/3 of that also. My gross is down also, I was hoping to make a better bonus this year than I did last year but that's not going to happen. I'm not going to even see my bonus. I'm sending it straight to nelnet to help pay off my student loans.

I leveled off with the same number of clients as last year. I retained 85% and made up the lost clients with new clients. My gross is slightly better than last year.

I always wonder why some lost clients don't come back. Statistically I know that I should retain 85% of the client base. Of the 15% that become lost - close to 50% of those were first year clients. It's the other half that I really wonder about. I lost an eleven year client.

About this time every year I think about sending a 'Missed You' survey to lost clients to see why they didn't return. Then I realize that there's not much I would do with the information anyway...so why waste the stamp.

Gens, you still with the Block? I command you to go forth and get your EA. With their pay structure, you will make a lot more money. IIRC it was almost a 30% raise for me.

I konw what you mean Rg. I've been thinking of calling my old work to see what happened with my clients. Would a tax newletter maybe better then a survey?

I'm 28 returns down from last year, but it seems to me that I did some of those in the off season. That doesn't include the 4 or 6 estate/trust returns I picked up from clients who died.

I'll have a few more extensions this year; I'm tried of killing myself on April 12th for some jerk who couldn't get his info in until the 5th. There are 25 people in line in front of him... ;-)

1 more to finish, 3 more extensions to work up, but only one is a Sch C. Then back to the office salt mines and the TurboTax reviews. The ones coming in april 14 & 15th are horrible.

On the bright side, one of my cousins who is a real sweetheart emailed me about doing her return. She is already filing the extension!

Tin, I'm still with Block and I am already studying for the EA. My biggest difficutly is with the with the business section of the EA. Since I'm not in a premium office I don't do those types of returns. Only sole propietors.

I just finished number 900 (40 of which are extensions) before I left office yesterday but I'm still down about 80 from last year. Increased fees on the more complex returns by 20% average and maintained the fees on the easier ones because I think more clients are using Turbo and IRS online methods. But, who knows, there are three days left and I usually have quite a few drop offs at last minute. I just take it hour by hour and will transmit until they stop coming in. There are probably 60 returns to be picked up also before Wednesday so my office is gonna get crowded this week...

I have leveled off to the point where I seem to be losing altitude, and in all likelihood, I'm headed for an early landing.

TinCook - Yes. Today, I'm at 638 completed, 6 pending, and a few more to be dropped off this week. Did 648 last year at April 15th and 5 more after that. Income is about 1k more than last year due to not raising my fees this year. My highest year was 960 back in the early 90s.

I am in what I call 'heavy hitter' season, also known as 'waiting for the K-1s to arrive' season. Most of these take extensions but you have to rough them out and send them the 4868 and REV-276 or NJ extension to make the payment....like the 21K one yesterday. Last year she made 550K at the Thundering Herd and he made 200 at GS; this year he makes 450K at MS, but she hit a bump and only took down 175.....looking at it, I see her options were under water, and then later in the year her employer was under water.

I'm e-filing extensions today. Wow, I didn't realize that we had that many clients who didn't come back this year. No wonder I'm missing my mark. We're still down 23 from where we should be tomorrow. That's down 4.2% - I guess that's not too bad considering the IRS' statistics of how many 'preparer prepared returns' are down from last year. A lot of DIYers this year!
