I still have 154 returns more to go to reach my goal to be even with last year. I don't think there are 154 more returns in the pipeline for me to do this year.  :(

I just need 20 more to meet my goal. I don't think there are 20 more returns out there.

I've had 16 returns dropped off since yesterday morning, so the slow time I've had in the last 2 to 3 weeks has finally ended. Had about 70 March clients bring their stuff in early February this year. This is the first year in 35 years that I've been caught up before April 15th (except for a couple of days last year during one week in March).

I expect I'll end up doing a few more than the 653 I did last year (down from 686 the year before). That means I still have at least 106 more returns to do (to be even with last year), including the 18 that are here now in the to-do and pending baskets. I estimate I've lost about 150 clients to Turbo Tax in the last few years and many more than that due to death over the 35 years.

I just billed last night and overall, I'm down about $2,000 from last year. I still have some more complicated personal returns in the hopper, but over all this year is going to be less than last year.

Call the newspaper and run this ad real quick. True, you may attract the fruitcakes, but they pay too:

"LAST CHANCE FOR REFUND: According to the Mayan calendar, the world will end in 2012. This leaves you, the consumer, with just 3 more vacations to your name! Now, how do you pay for vacations? YOUR REFUND. Therefore, get your tax return here, right here...before we reach the point of NO RETURN. Your friendly (and qualified) tax preparer: Mr/Mrs/Ms. X."

I grant ever one permission to use this if they want to.

Crow, I might just use that ad. Or I Mayan not.

Use it. I think it might pass muster if used in the right tongue in cheek context, alternative newspaper etc. I actually think it would go over pretty well in something like Creative Loafing.

If the Service says anything about it, which they won't, but if they did, I say: compliance, this is a compiance gold mine.

Now, as an alternative to the above ad, for those who might owe tax, put in this line: "Come in from the Cold errant taxpayers! 2012 is here, and you might not be! This is a chance to come clean and file your taxes before the world ends. Why? You'll never have to actually 'pay' them! Call etc. etc."

At Fort Jackson in His Majesty's army service in 1968, we would walk about the Finance and Accounting office and shout out our days: "42" and someone would reply '19.' The shortest of the short-timers would wear a special 'short timers' badge. I ETSed 9/288/68 but never got to wear it since someone else got out the 26th and I was off that week, using up leave. 2/3rds of the staff were civilians, GSA 3-4-5s, and they would get amused.

Who could see the light at the end of the tunnel? I can, Yea!!! Starting April 17th I'm taking 8 solid weeks off, then I'm headed back to the office to work on extensions and any IRS Letters that will appear in the off season.

Kevin, how are you doing with your 154 return goal to be even with last year?

Kevinh5 (talk|edits) said:

I am now 29 from the goal. I only have 2 or 3 more in-house, so I doubt I'll make it.

I'm pulling a lot less # then I was at HR Block. I miss the marketing machine. Gross is down, but my % is much bigger.

Deback, is that your personal total? Wow. My personal best was about a third of that.

Genskitty (talk|edits) said:

Deback, I could only aspire to have that many returns.

TinCook, I will also have only about a 1/3 of that also. My gross is down also, I was hoping to make a better bonus this year than I did last year but that's not going to happen. I'm not going to even see my bonus. I'm sending it straight to nelnet to help pay off my student loans.

I leveled off with the same number of clients as last year. I retained 85% and made up the lost clients with new clients. My gross is slightly better than last year.
