I had a client ask me an interesting question that I do not know the answer to. She is self employed and has been paying her own health insurance that is set up through her business. She was the only insured on the plan. Her business has dropped off to where she can no longer afford the premiums, and she is only working a few hours a week. She does work two other part time jobs, but she is not eligible for benefits at either of these jobs since she is only part time. Her question is: "Can she consider herself to be laid off from her self employment job, and thereby convert her coverage to a COBRA policy, and have the government subsidize it 65% under the 2009 Economic Stimulus Package?" I would appreciate any input from anyone who has some knowledge in this area. Thank you.
