Client asked me to file electronic extensions, which I did.

Now she is worried that a change in information could lead to a tax liability so I sent her new paper extensions with instructions to mail them in with checks for tax payment.

Does that ever create a "conflict" or problem in IRS system?

Did you file an amended return on a 1040x?

Or is she just asking for a 9465 installment payment?

If there's still time, I'd call her and tell her to write "Revised" or "Amended" on the Form 4868 before she mails it. That might save the IRS from becoming confused about receiving two extensions.

EasternPA - Illini asked about filing two extensions, so your answers have nothing to do with the original question.

sure -- revised or amended 4868 makes good sense

Was the 4868 filed with zeros? Do you know whether the client will owe? Do they normally get a refund? If you know, or suspect they are going to owe have them send a check by midnight.

Either way no amended 4868 is needed. taxea

That's the only reason we are talking about amending it EA. I electronically filed extension with zero liability -- then she calls back with, well maybe I forgot to tell you my son is no longer a dependent and I am no longer H of H, which creates a liability -- I sent her a PAPER extension with the liability on it and she mailed it in with a check before 4/15/09.

Now the question is, will it confuse the IRS or not?
