I read the previous discussions, but wanted to hear it again. If client is career military and they are expected to have pressed uniforms, is the dry cleaning and pressing deductible? I know of one CPA who says, "if in doubt, deduct."

Military uniforms are not adaptable to general wear, and therefore, the dry cleaing bill is deductible. Reg § 1.262-1(b)(8) provides that military uniforms that merely take the place of civilian clothes may not be deducted. I believe that military uniforms do not take the place of civilian clothes.

However, the cost of uniforms and cleaning should be reduced by any nontaxable uniform allowance.
