another ? about consumer forum

I understand that anyone viewing ALL discussions will see them. Is the intention then that anyone just viewing TAX or ACCOUNTING will not see them, and will only see them if viewing ALL: i.e. there will be no direct link to that forum? I suppose once someone views a Consumer Discussion question the category should let them know that it is a consumer question. Kevinh5

Consumer forum

We don't want to solicit consumer questions, and we don't need to make it easy for non-pros to get through the 'system', but how will Tax Pros know they are answering a consumer question if they aren't looking in a special forum? And if a non-pro doesn't bookmark his page, how will he find his discussion 3 days later? You know how some of us hate repeat questions. Kevinh5

Thanks

Tim,

Thanks for your hard work. We appreciate it.

These changes you made are very helpful. Thanks again.

Sorting search results

Hey Tim, since I know you're reading...and this has probably been asked before, but is there a way to sort the search results so that they're sorted by most recent POSTS and not by the thread date? And of course, if the most recent could be at the top instead of the bottom...but don't know what limits you have because of Wiki. Thanks, Jeff

Thanks for the template instructions

yes, Trillium and I have spent more time than we thought to do some preliminaries, but I can see that it is alredy improving people's attitudes. Kevinh5

HI, those copyright violation threads

were all part of the issue I had with Lance Wallach. I thought they were more spam than anything, but they had all been posted as appearing in various accounting trade journals. Kevinh5

And thanks for the template suggestion, too (and the link clean-up). Are the internal links more efficient from a processing standpoint, or just part of a philosophy of keeping things (like code) clean? ...Trillium

Consumer Chat Q

Interesting - I'd thought you'd used that "start a new chat discussion" wording on purpose, to provide a subtle reinforcement that the consumer forum wasn't a source of free tax advice for consumers, but rather a place where their questions go when they're not appropriate elsewhere - after which "chats" about the questions might take place! I guess I read a lot into one extraneous word, didn't I? ...Trillium

The mouse-over balloons on the topics column of the main list page isn't very useful because the width of that column adjusts to fit all of that field's content. If the width were restricted the balloons would be useful and there would be more room for another column such as the forum in which a discussion was posted. The same could be done for the Creator and Last Poster columns. What do you think? -- Larry Hess, CPA | Albuquerque, NM

Thanks for providing us an opporteunity to talk with other professionals. IS there anyway to include a spreadsheet in the field? It would make explaining some of the fact patterns much easier.

Pubs

As you probably figured out, I started at the bottom of the list and I'm working up. The ones that I didn't edit along the way were checked; they have appropriate (current) overviews and links. So - if you have somebody else work on this, too, maybe have them start from the top and work down. I'm just doing it on and off - when my workload is light and my mood is right. They'll probably beat me to the middle.

FYI, there have been a few so far that are no longer active pubs (discontinued/replaced). You indicated that it's important to maintain the pages since they are linked from the various intuit software programs, so I've simply noted that they're outdated, and provided links to the current info (if any).

Strange occurance re logging in

Hi Tim, I was in the consumer forum (not yet logged in) and clicked on a particular user name to check the profile.....and all of a sudden, I WAS logged in without ever typing my password in. Only happened with that user name (Ashing - the thread had to do with Code 14 on a W-2). I tried other names in the same thread without it happening; I tried other threads with different user names without it happening. That thread is the only one she's contributed to. Seems very odd - not sure it's a problem; but thought you might want to know.Belle 16:45, 20 January 2009 (CST)

Stealth editing

Tim, FYI: A couple of forums don’t actually have stealth editing enabled – chat, tax tips, and feedback. I suppose it’s not so important on those forums if the edits change the order of the discussions, but I’ve ended up with a couple of the discussions out of order (technically) in trying to get the name of the spammer out of the “last poster” field. Nothing that won’t be resolved once the actual last posts are days old rather than hours old, but I figured I’d mention it in case you want to make the editing treatment consistent. - Trillium

Flat tax? Need to worry?

Hi,

I didn't know if you would be interested in the dialogue on this thread. A couple of people are really rude, calling each other and their comments names. It seems contrary to our code to me. It is amazing how combative and juvenile "professionals" can be. I was going to post simply "be nice", but nothing good is going to come from me inserting myself into the muck. The ball is in your court and I will know not to revisit that thread.

Ohio medical cost tax deduction

I'm a practice in GA, but have few OH clients. I'm having trouble understanding this tax deduction and I'm not sure my software (Lacerte) is calculating correctly.

As I understand it, there should be a deduction for unsubsidized health insurance and Long-term care insurance without limitation. Lacerte includes these costs in total medical and limits to the amount in excess of 7.5%.

Either I don't understand, I'm inputting incorrectly or the software has a glitch.

Can you shed any light? Thanks so much

Hi Tim,

I had a post on tax practice several days ago. The great almanac users responded and one of the suggestions was to create a "tax practice" section. It looks like you've done that and I wanted to know how to map the "tax" discussion to the new area. Thank you!

SBWOTA

I was looking at Tax Acts that have not been merged into the Code. The legislative text, under the Small Business and Work Opportunity Tax Act of 2007 seems to be merely the Senate finance bill. I think the final bill was HR 2206.

The reason i noticed this was that the legislative text you have used did not include the changes to te kiddie tax and the bill sections do not line up with the technical explanations.

How to navigate and ask a tax question

I have used TaxAlmanac before but I am finding it very difficult to find the venue where I can ask a tax question. I went through the process of 'Ask a Tax Question' but in the process I am told to create a profile, which I have already done, but the instructions just stop at that point in directing me any further. I need help. Thank you. Even this email, to you, does not have a 'submit' button.

change user name

Hello, I just created an account, so that I could ask a question. My first answer was annoyance with my user name, so I would like to change it, because it was not my intention to annoy anyone.

How about: Sharon? Sharon1221? If neither of those work, you can pick some numbers to put after Sharon.

I can't think of anything else at the moment. I made my user name what first popped into my head.

Name chg request from Sharon

Hi, Tim - I think the name change request just above this message has been handled already (Sharon1221 has been newly created), and I left a note on the (original) user's talk page to confirm. At this point, I don't think there's a name change needed. Will keep you posted. Private Letter Rulings

Tim... I was just looking at your community portal info. I happen to have a copy of a private letter ruling that addresses extra duty by Honolulu PD officers. We here use this to justify not having to do a Sch C or SE forms. The ruling came about because HPD does not withhold SE taxes and the officers do special duty for private companies. The argument was that since the officers are sanctioned by HPD for this work, and because they are required to be in uniform and use their duty vehicles this is an extension of their job and SE should not apply. The questioned was asked of the IRS by HPD. I am not at my business computer at the moment. I will post it, if I can figure out how, in the morning. When my workload slows down I would be happy to do what I can to help. I could start by posting the IRS Newsletters as I get them. (Also have several on file). How do I post them? Do I just copy the email I get and post it? Will it maintain the link to the IRS site via the copy and paste? Is that what you want? Let me know. Laura (taxea)

Link Registration and login page to Profile

Tom I just had another thought. Can the program be set up so that new users are linked directly to their profile page and put an * on lines they would be required to fill-in. I was thinking just the lines that would be helpful in determining their level of expertise...they could still keep anything private that they want to.

It would work so that whenever they log in they as soon as they entered their login info the program would take them directly to the profile page with a notification that they will not be able to post until the "*" lines are filled in.

Brenda's name change has been done

Hi, Tim - The name change that Brenda requested, just above, has been made. The earlier name change request from Lskeys is, I believe, moot; I'd sent him a note suggesting a shorter "new" name, and not long after that he set up with a new ID instead. Also, Scottycoyote's issues with editing his user page turned out to be the same as what Genskitty was experiencing last spring, and he fixed it the same way she did, by unchecking the "use external editor" preference. The other intervening requests I'll leave for you; picture files are outside the scope of my wiki knowledge!

Hi there,

Thank you for having this site. It is wonderful.

I know this is easier said than done. But is there a way we can make the search button more friendly? i.e. I needed to look up 'foreign income exclusion' but I wasn't aware of the terminology at the time. Suggestion

Hello,

I am impressed with the quality of this huge network. I just became a member and I have learned many wonderful things. Thank you for your dedication in bringing this shared point of information available to us.

I posted a genuine question asking for a checklist or suggestions from seasoned professionales to some one being proactive and wanting to learn from them. So far twelve plus responses but just one or two are meaningful.

Although I like jokes I do not appreciate that it goes on. It seems like the idea is just to increase the number of postings regardless of how useful they are.

My suggestion is that the responses with sarcastic content or meaningless jokes be limited. I find disrespectful that someone tells me to get a bikini wax if I want to start and accounting practice.

Thank you so much for this great forum and I hope you find my positive criticism objective and useful to our discussion forums.

Best regards.

TA forums - links don't show up in Firefox?

Hi, Tim - in a recent discussion, LH2004 was not able to see links that Kevin had embedded in a post - here's his comment about it: "Aha. No blue on my screen in Firefox: your prior post appears just as [text omitted]. A little bit of sleuthing leads me to the conclusion that TaxAlmanac's forum software is emitting invalid CSS and relying on some Internet Explorer-specific hacks, for no apparent reason."

Wonder if you could comment on that - e.g., if it's a known issue that our embedded links may not be obvious to someone using Firefox, and if so, whether that's something that might be able to be fixed in the future?

Also, would this be just a discussion forum posting issue, or would it also be true for the user and user talk pages, and for the category pages, or the Submit a New Tax Question page, for example?

There have been times in the past that people have seemingly ignored links that were provided for them - links to an exact prior answer to their question, or a link to the profile page when they say they can't find it, etc. I've always assumed that was willful, but given the number of Firefox users out there (enough to matter), maybe there's a benefit to providing some context in the post to make it more obvious that there's a clickable field included in the post. I'd like to add something to the FAQs about this if it's something the users should be aware of when providing links.

Thanks - Trillium 01:36, 21 October 2009 (CDT)

Glad it's not a Firefox problem in general

Thanks, Tim. So I guess those other people I mentioned above really are just ignoring the links we provide. (Can my ego take it?)

Need for a moderator

Hi Tim,

I would very much like your help resolving an issue with user UncleSam. I believe that Trillium has approached you and I cannot remember whether I have or not. This has been an on-going problem to which I have not contributed to the problem...he didn't like a post I put out there and has been name calling and abusing since.

He has been asked to stop and I have yet to match his harassment out of respect for the board members, Trillium, and yourself. However, despite cooling off for some time he is right back.

Here's the latest:

http://taxalmanac.com/index.php/Discussion:Part_2_of_2009-2010_EA_Exam

Very interesting Brock - a wiseass like you who finds an imaginitive way to corrupt the IRS security system to get what you want on e-services without being licensed is in no position to chastise someone who's making a conscientious effort to get by the exam.

At least he's trying - compared to you who's timing to take the exam strictly to avoid having to pay a (second) license registration fee. Wouldn't you rather have the exam passed in total as early as possible?

I could give you a list of others that are just as bad or worse. We are supposed to be a board of professionals but this guy wants to act like this and yet remains a poster here. There is a code of conduct here as follows: http://taxalmanac.com/index.php/Code_of_Conduct . I do not know why he is continually allowed to berate, name call, and abuse another poster without being banned. The only reason is that some on this board feel he has something to add so his behavior is tolerated.

Can you not ban this user?

Thanks,

CCIFP Designation

Hi Tim:

I really enjoy the board here and want to say thank you for providing this forum. I have noticed that there are designations for CPA, or EA, or PTP, or CFP, etc. available to be added to user profiles. I do not see one for the professional designation which I hold of CCIFP[1]. Since adding "{ { CCIFP }}" to my profile only created a broken link when previewed, I presume a template needs to be created. I am very proud of my professional status and would like it to be available to taxalmanac users in the same way that a CPA or EA would have their achievement highlighted on their profile. Can you either create this designation or direct me to a part of the sight which would explain to me how to do it? Thank you, PVCC-CCIFP 17:18, 30 January 2010 (CST)

Hi Tim I'm just curious...your ratings page shows me in gold yet my page shows more than 500 posts. How am I ever going to catch up with Kevin 5 at this rate. I have been a member for several years now and am sure I have posted more than 300 posts. Do you count responses or new posts or both?

E-mail notification of discussion changes

Tim, I've verified my email address, checked the notification boxes, checked the "Watch this discussion" box for a discussion which has changed several times since I did so, checked my ISP's spam box, my e-mail client's spam box and nothing I've tried has allowed me to receive e-mails on changes in discussions I'm watching.

Any ideas?

Chuck

Code of conduct?

Tim,

I know you rely on user moderation but there is a code of conduct and unclesam keeps violating it against me personally. He's been asked by Kevin and Trillium to quit but he persists. How many times will he be allowed to violate the code of conduct before he's banned?

This is uncalled for, unwarranted, and unacceptable.

New username?

Hi Mr. Doyle

Is there any way to change my username from CertifiedTaxCoach to Sdtax? I was informed it is too long and need to start a new account, but I want to keep my history.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Regarding the Insolvency FMV question:

There are other situations where FMV takes on more of a Net Realizable Value approach. I was wondering if this was one of those cases. For instance, in a OIC filing, I have used a Net Realizable Value approach with regards to qualified assets. The Service seemed to go along with it. In the case of CPA prepared personal financials there is this concept of addressing the taxes due on liquidation of the assets listed. Maybe GAAP isn't relevant here, or maybe it is?

As to my question on Short Sale COD.

Should the COD income computation be different for a foreclosure vs. a short sale? Does the law dictate how the COD is computed, or does the bank get to define how COD is computed? This question seems to have some of the same trappings of my earlier question. The Bank gets to compute COD based on what they realize from the sale, not based true FMV. On the other hand, in a foreclosure, the FMV at the time of transfer dictates the computation of the COD--not what the bank realizes. (I have even made recommendations to clients to get their own professional appraisals done, because the bank valuations are sometimes very odd.) Maybe I am seeing this issue wrong... If so, can you help me see the light. By the way, thank you so much for your help!

questions

Not sure where to address this, but I received an email stating that I requested to change my password with this web site, and I didn't. Should I be worried? 22:29, 2 September 2010 (CDT) Cindy

Tim, I posted a question and Dave Fogel answered saying I need to update my profile. I did update my profile a couple of days after I posted my question. I saw my question with Dave's response on Thursday morning (9/16/10) but now I can see it. Has it been moved to the consumer forum?? How can I get it posted back in the tax professional forum? Thanks.

Username change request

Can you change my username - currently "Scott" - to "Scott_Bonacker" please?

Thanks,

Scott

Scott 09:46, 24 September 2010 (CDT)

Two topics

1. I've responded to Scott Bonacker about the name change, asking him to confirm that he wants to use (a) his full real name in spite of privacy issues and (b) a name that'll wrap to two lines in the tax forum index, due to length. Haven't heard back yet.

2. I've been noticing recently that longer pages (generally Rev Procs and REGs, but also Sec. 7701, which I fixed) have been getting cut off at the end. In some cases, I'm quite sure that the entire content was there in the past, at the very least on preview during import; in others I really can't claim that with certainty. The three partial-content pages I found today are all 63kb (it warns you about the size at the top of the page when you click edit). Hadn't checked that previously, but wouldn't be surprised to find that it's all content beyond 63kb that's been lost.

Is this something new, or have I just not noticed it until now? I actually wondered if it had something to do with some recent need to restore from a backup (perhaps only the first 63kb is retained by default?), since I am able to put the additional content back in and end up with more than 63kb, e.g., I fixed Rev. Proc. 2010-1 a couple of days ago, and it still has the entire 229kb of content. In case you need to narrow down a time line, the newest page I found w/deleted content was Notice 2010-60, which was originally imported on Sept 2, 2010 (and I'm pretty sure I didn't just import the first half!).

If this is a permanent requirement, please let me know and I'll focus more on splitting long items into components. If it is a glitch that isn't expected to be repeated, is there any way you can run a list of all Research Resources that are exactly 63kb - that would provide me with a to-do list of pages to restore (or let me know if you can restore them w/less manual labor, please!).

Breaking news - it's not just the research resources - some of the longer discussions are also missing posts, e.g., Discussion:Hot news on S corp Health Insurance (Notice 2008-1).

Thanks!

removing my user name from TA

Tim, I sent this to Trillium and he suggested I send it to you. To: Trillium, I guess you're the one to ask this of but although I have learned so much and appreciate the connection with so many other tax and accounting individuals on TA, I am finding two things that concern me. I have posted enough here that my user name comes up way too often in even a Google search to make me comfortable. As well, though I will continue to come here to search for answers, etc. I will no longer post responses or questions this being mainly due to some of the discussions posted in the General Chat. It seems that this very useful website has been hijacked by some who use it as their own to post some very unagreeable comments and links. That's all I will say about that as it is each person's right to say and do as they please but I do not want to be a part of this any longer. That said, is there a way to either change or eliminate my user name entirely from TA? Thank you for your help.LJACPA 23:54, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Crash

Hi Tim,

Just a heads up...several times in the recent past, I've posted responses to questions and I immediately get kicked out of TA. Then, when I go back in, my post shows up, but not my name - It still shows the name of the person that posted immediately prior to my last post. It's problematic because posters, who may view the master page only, assume that there are no new posts to the thread...since a new name isn't populated.

Hello Tim -

The more I use this website, the more I begin to like it. Thank you for being the moderator!

I would like to change my user name. Currently it is listed as JLesemann and because of the obvious, I would like to change it to:

1st pref - NC-CPA (I'm sure that is taken)

2nd pref - CPA-NC

3rd pref - CPA-HuntersvilleNC

If all of those are taken, feel free to pick something else reasonablly close.

Also, how do I get my user page to show I'm a CPA? I've seen some profiles that have a caption at the bottome stating this. It doesn't look like they put it there themselves but I could be wrong.

Thanks for any and all help!

Jay

email notifications for Watchlist items

Tim, I asked Trillium about this a while back and it was suggested that I ask you. (I worded it that way because I don't know whether Trillium is a HE or SHE! ;) ) I used to get an email notification whenever a Watchlist item changed. I have not gotten one for several months, even though pages I want to see are marked. Today, I got my first notification in a long time...a change that VATaxes made to Natalie's page. I don't know how I accidentally marked her page, but was happy to see the system working again. Has something been fixed where I can expect to continue to see these notifications? Use of real name question..

In my preferences, I just saw that if we provide our real name, then we will be given credit for our posts. My concern is whether this info, our name, is posted or made available to others?

Hi Tim

Sorry to bother you with such items but I've worked with Trillium and Kevin to no avail. I have no idea what this guy's problem is or why he feels it is appropriate to come out of the woodwork and personally attack me for no reason. This is the last in a long list of problems he's caused.

This is clearly a violation of the rules around here yet he's left around to just continue.

Here's the post:

http://www.taxalmanac.org/index.php/Discussion:Feeling_that_familiar_itch...thinking_of_taking_the_CPA_exam

Here's what he wrote in case he deletes it:

"Brock seems to be pretty determined to find the laziest way to accomplish his goals without earning it. Before he starts he's got a bigoted opinion and sour grapes approach after he asks for peoples' opinions. Why not search every state in the country, find the state that's got the most lenient way to pass the CPA exam and get your license, then change your resident state? That way - you won't have to go through the painful exhausting way of earning the CPA credential by earning it through hard work and merit. I went to the Becker CPA Review school - the one Brock hates - during income tax season and wound up passing the CPA exam over 20 years ago. The one thing Becker taught was to have an organized thinking mind, as well as understand learning and test taking techniques. Yes - it's a different environment today - so I can't compare it as if it's the same. Remember his spelling of relief - H O M E W O R K. Guess you didn't do it Brock.

But when a person has enough determination to STICK IT OUT in spite of all the unpleasant obstacles (oops - I clicked my heels, Brock - sorry to intrude in your space for privacy) and not looking for excuses to complain for sympathy - they'll get by the exam."

Not only is it a direct and uncalled for personal attack, I have no idea what he's talking about in much of it.

Can you not ban this guy? Trillium and Kevin can vouche for the problems I have had with this guy.

Thanks,

BrockEA

Post deleted because profile did not indicate was tax professional

I hope you are the right person to ask. I just stumbled across this discussion: Discussion:Reasons to transfer real estate into an S Corp, and noticed in the Tax Questions list of discussions that I was shown as the last poster. I did not remember this post so I looked for it and, if I am reading the thread correctly, it has been removed and replaced with "post removed - no user profile indicating the person is a tax pro". Am I interpreting this correctly? It is of no consequence, but I am curious. Thanks. Podolin 02:42, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Tim, the Tax Code resource needs to be updated

About the Internal Revenue Code something not updated since 2007 can't be relied on. I used TaxAlmanac's version of the tax code to write a CPE text I presented at the NAEA conference last week, and all of the penalty amounts I cited were incorrect. Of course, that was my fault, but having the WRONG answer out there is worse than having NO answer. I say we disable the Code and Regs from the site if they can't be imported correctly and up to date.

Thanks Kevinh5

Suggestion

Would it be possible to highlight or put some indication on the discussion main page/s that would indicate that a poster has been following or has posted to a topic? Dear Mr. Doyle, I am surprised that I see no one talking about IC-DISCs. It concerns me as this is a very good technique and if there is a dearth of this topic, maybe this will be my contribution. My question posted was:

Bretsharon (talk|edits) said: 24 July 2013 Why don't we see more IC-DISCs? I have to engineers who spread out their work on the kitchen table while the construction site is in China. According to IC regs, you can use a IC-DISC if are doing engineering or architecture in the US for a project outside the US, then that qualifies as an export receipt. 1.993-1 Is there a mine there and I don't see it??
