Audit Chart
Doyle, December 2006 I posted a quesion about "How Many Audits Did You Have in 2006". Can you create that chart again for us to fill in? You have my permission to ask that same question again as if I did it and add the chart. Thanks. Let me know if I should first start the discussion and then you add chart. David Zweig

HOW TO UPLOAD OWN PHOTO?
I briefly scanned the Contents to see if this was a FAQ but I am tired at the moment
I am wondering, how do I upload my own photo in lieu of the default "nopic.jpg"???
Thanks for the great site...

Edits Made to Discussions
Tim, Last year you made changes to the Tax Questions forum so that when somebody edits a prior post, the thread does not get moved back up to the top of the list. It does not appear that you made this same change to the other discussion forums. I just edited something on the Acctg Questions forum and that thread moved back up to the top of the list. --PVVCPA 11:43, 12 January 2008 (CST)
Also, Is there a way for everyone that has that thread bookmarked to not get a notice sent to them when there are only edits made to prior posts?
Tim, Nevermind. I was wrong about this first issue, and the second issue is important for people who are keeping an eye on a thread. --PVVCPA 09:19, 13 January 2008 (CST)

Bookmarks - only one day shows
Tim, I used to be able to automatically see the last three days of bookmarks when I went to my bookmark page. Now it only shows one day. Something got changed in the last several days. I would actually prefer to always see the last seven days. Is that possible? If not, I'd like to go back to the last three.Natalie 22:30, 10 February 2008 (CST)Natalie
I figured I'd better manually select to list the past three days to see if I missed any updated pages. Sure enough I did. I went to check the first one, and when I went back to my bookmarked pages, it only showed the current day again.Natalie 14:33, 11 February 2008 (CST)Natalie
This is starting to frustrate me. It looks like there is a 12 hour default on the bookmarked pages. I have to select 3 days every time I go to my bookmarked pages in order to see them all. Natalie 14:31, 13 February 2008 (CST)Natalie

Hi,
Don't know if you are still active here. I am a new member. Is it true that references to watchlist means "my bookmarks"? I searched the forum for a topic on efin applications, and found a recent (Feb. 2008)thread on the subject I am interested in. I saw a box at the bottom to add to my watchlist. I checked the box but can't find a watch list. I do see "my bookmarks" at the top of my screen. Thanks for any help.

just wondering
Tim, Is there a way to leave you a message without having it be visible to others? Glad I asked bc I never knew I had to confirm my email, and had never done it. However, I've not gotten the confirmation email. Does it take a long time? I figured it should be quick, but I am not getting the email. I've verified that the email address in my preferences is correct, and I've gone through the steps to verify it, and it says one was sent. I don't have any filters for stopping the email, so I'm not sure what the problem is. The domain is my own: wolfwareinc.com I tested it 2 other emails, and the second one got the email, but it is an email through a client, and i don't really want to use that one. The third is an internet email account, and it also has not received it, even though I get constant spam on that site. Wwtaxes 10:32, 7 March 2008 (CST)

Hey Tim: - I just wanted to apologize to you. I got carried away mid-last week. I beat up on a new poster last week. She didn't deserve it. Her user name is Tdinter1. My fault, I overreacted. Bookmark restrictions?
Tim, I am looking for a discussion I started either early February or late January. When I click on "all" to see all of my bookmarks, they only go up through 2/17/08. I used to be able to see all of them. Is TA cutting back on the amount of stuff that is saved on the website? If not, why did this happen? Missing discussion
This is so weird, Tim. I posted a question about an IRS levy notice early February or late January, and I just cannot find it. In it, IRSfixer said I gave the worst advice to my client about payment of penalties. I've looked back on my bookmarks and contributions and his contributions as well, and I cannot find it anywhere. Do you have any ideas why I can't find it?Natalie 19:08, 11 March 2008 (CDT)Natalie

DIYs
Tim, I think we need a solution to the DIY issue, and it sounds like a DIY forum would work best. Some people have questions that are easy enough to answer, but the threads turn into running rude and unnecessary comments.
Any word yet on my bookmark question from a few days ago?Natalie 14:20, 18 March 2008 (CDT)Natalie
DIY
I saw Natalie's comment to you. I wish to add to it. In my humble opinion, the DIY area is a necessary evil. I do have a stronger background in the accounting area than tax, so I do answer more questions there as often as I can. I do also try to send the homework people on their way and with the one honest mistake I did make and admit to, I provide links and provide guidance as best I can. If I see a question I feel is outside my area, I leave it to Natalie or someone else. I stay clear. I try to steer the DIY'ers away like Kevin does and sometimes people may misinterpret my straightforward style with being rude. I am not rude or arrogant. I just deliver a message in a different manner than most. That said, I will try to come across a little less strong if that's what is needed. You know where to reach me personally to discuss this off-line. Best wishes, TomTaocpa 06:58, 19 March 2008 (CDT)

Puru
Tim - we have someone with the user name Puru. He has been asked, by me, several times to post a profile. He has yet to comply. He posts advice frequently and a pattern is beginning to emerge that his advice is not accurate in some cases. RoyDaleOne has challenged him to provide backup. I found two pieces of advice inaccurate. We need to make sure he's not leading people astray here. That could lead to problems. Any assistance is appreciated. Tim, Several of us have noticed posts from Puru that are incomplete and potentially inaccurate, yet are stated with an 'air of authority'. Tom, and others, have asked for his profile. A certain user again.....
Okay Tim - it's about a certain user named Puru again. Trillium clued me in that it looks like they are a DIY'er. Puru asked a question about FICA taxes and deleted it after they were skewered by people here. The terms of the user agreement doesn't allow them to edit posts in this fashion, does it? Now it seems now they appear bent on answering questions with misleading, incomplete or incorrect information. We can't have this. What can be done? Banning them may not do any good especially if they can just sign up again. TomTaocpa 18:02, 9 April 2008 (CDT)
Thanks, Tim
Tim - thank you. I'm sorry I seem like a pest about this person, but it's annoying. The answers are just vague, incomplete, inaccurate or flat out wrong. Belle, RoyDaleOne, Trillium and others have noticed it as well. I will post after this user because it seems I am the first to catch it because these days I am up at 4:30am-5:00am East Coast time and they are on here a couple of hours before. We've done what we can at this point and we will certainly keep an eye out for them. Thanks again. TomTaocpa 18:59, 9 April 2008 (CDT)

Hi Tim,
Wanted to know whether it was appropriate to ask the TA group for networking help for a position I'm looking to fill on behalf of a tax and accounting publisher client. My client is looking for a Director, Accounting Content to contribute to its online subscription service. This is a relatively tough position to fill since it requires a CPA with strong auditing experience and someone with a bit of a writing background and an interest in shifting their career to publishing.
Anyway, my intention is not to breech any protocols -- so please advise me on what my options might be.
Warm regards,

c corp, s corp or nonprofit
Riley,
I have been reading your responses across this forum, while I was looking for information on the aforementioned entities. Imparticularly, what the max contribution is on the C and S Corps charitable donations? This information will help me greatly in structuring my corporation since 50% of the profits will go to public charitable foundations (501 c3's) . If the cap is below 50%, then I have to structure an nonprofit.
If it is at 50% for either of the corporations, can I still structure a nonprofit and have the funds from the corporation funneled thru the nonprofit to the charities?
I'm sorry to bother you, but you seemed the most knowledgeable in the forum. I thank you in advance for your time.

Can you please check the Submit a Tax Question screen?
A new user just edited the Submit_a_Tax Question page to put their question on it!! So now nobody else will be able to submit a question until it's reverted back to what was there before.
I'm not sure how to revert back to a prior incarnation, so I hope you're reading and can do your magic. In the meantime, I'll see if copying the prior text from your last prior change and pasting it into a new edit will do the trick.
Thanks. Trillium 12:05, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
I might have fixed it?
Tim - referring to my posting just above - I basically copied the text and codes out of your last prior revision to the Submit_a_Tax_Question page and pasted them line by line so that the latest edit is a mirror of your latest edit, and the new user's question is gone. When I click on the various links (am/am not a tax pro) it does, now, seem to take you to the correct pages. But could you please make sure that I've done it correctly and not messed up any behind-the-scenes stuff?
Thanks a lot. Trillium 12:17, 13 June 2008 (CDT)

Spammers
Hi, Tim -
Both OlozeLrace and PasdeLrict, new users today, added nonsense words to existing pages: Notice 2004-42, which I re-edited, and TMeeker's user page, which I left alone as it looks like it's inactive anyway. I would also suspect new user VargeTsitc to be part of the same gang, based on username style, but so far no spam from that one.
In addition, over the past couple of days, two then-new users posted links about stopping credit card debt on two threads where the reference didn't really apply: 1 and 2. Unlike that group back on June 24 that posted the same "auditor crossing" spam to something like seven places - new articles, various discussions, and basically anywhere else they could put it - this hasn't yet seemed to call out for immediate removal, but I guess you probably want to know about this stuff to keep an eye on it (or something).
Finally, not sure what, exactly, is up here, but I doubt that link's got much to do with Delaware state taxes.
All FYI. Thx.
Trillium 23:08, 11 July 2008 (CDT)
Editing to say that I ultimately did go in and edit TMeeker’s user page, after PasdeLrict came back and added a bunch of spam links there on Sunday. And there were three more users that were doing that same nonsense word edit stuff: AcbosItdel, AcpasNoric, and DelliRelra.
What is up with that, anyway? They test to see if we’re watching, and if we don’t catch it and take their nonsense word away, they’ll spam that page?

Tax forum format
Hello Tim, sorry to bother you but for some reason when I log on to the tax forum, the title column is very narrow and the other columns are very wide resulting in about 1/3 of the discussions being listed on the page than previously. If I sort by another column it corrects itself unless I sort by last reply which is the one I want (and I assume is the default), then the problem format returns. Any way to correct this? Hope I've made myself clear. Thanks, Paul Brush PBinNJ

Appropriateness of a particular user's participation in TA
I hope this isn’t too petty – but I feel like user Alan Baggett is simply taking advantage of TaxAlmanac’s high placement on web search engines as a way to sell his services and/or more copies of the tell-all book that he wrote about Canadian taxes. I've read a few of his posts, and they were long and rambling,
-- actually, many of the posts are taken from media sources. On occasion they may be long but I would certainly question the 'rambling' comment. --
and seemed to serve little or no purpose to the primary population here (“here” being a website developed by a provider of American tax software and populated by tax professionals working on American taxes) –
--many competent American Tax Professionals have occasion to deal with the Canadian version of the IRS and a an introductory grounding is beneficial to helping their clients---
and yet he collects requests and testimonials on his Talk Page from new users who find him through searches and then contact him here.
--this is an untrue statement and I hope tdoyle will refrain from such in the future as it brings into question everything he or she posts---
An uninformed glance at the Tax Tips forum might make an outsider think it’s Alan Baggett’s playground.
Seems to me he should spend the time and/or cash to develop his own website and do what it takes to make it popular enough to get TaxAlmanac-level web engine placement.
--I thought the idea behind a forum )and this forum in particular) was to share tax knowledge and experiences. Not to attack others and make false statements and baseless accusations. I think all TaxAlmanac user's would appreciate this from you in the future.---
-- As well, the only link in post(s) are to the library of tax stories compiled by the press and users of the tax system as well as tax employees---
In other words, in TaxAlmanac’s stead, I feel used.
If this type of activity isn't already prohibited by the terms & use of the website, or by the code of conduct, I'd recommend that one or both be revised so that it would be clear that he (or any user) shouldn't use TA as a vehicle for direct practice marketing (which I believe his posts, in the aggregate, are).
--Again, there is no marketing or sales involved --
(Also – see this article – I have no idea if this site is National Enquirer-esque or legitimate, but if he’s leaking confidential information, you probably don’t want him doing it here….)
--Yes, this is a National Enquirer-esq type story, good on you for recognizing that!---

can you block this constant spammer
DroncOlodo Discussion:Life Estate, House sold, Mother still alive here
Dronc
It was actually Kevin who alerted you to Dronc's latest reappearance. But thanks for the anti-spam award. Kevin oughta have one of those too, although it'd pale in comparision to his other awards...
My question: somehow, DroncOlodo was able to post after you'd blocked him - he's now been blocked twice, once on the 15th, and then again on the 17th after he posted to that discussion that Kevin pointed out. Is that a loophole of sorts, in that blocked users may be able to continue to post to discussions they were "involved" in prior to the block? I see that you've now removed his original post to that discussion, which I had contemplated doing the first time around. If that's a key to making the user-block "stick," I'll be sure to check for that if the situation comes up again.

Loophole
Tim, Dronc was back again this evening, on that same discussion that Kevin pointed out over the weekend. I'm becoming even more convinced that there's a loophole that lets a blocked user continue to post to discussions they've previously participated in.
Do you have a way to lock a particular discussion? That might solve the immediate problem. (Or - given that the discussion is from March 2006, I imagine that nobody'd particularly miss it if you had to make a management decision to have it deleted altogether....)

This guy keeps leaving Canadian tax posts
Discussion:Why SOME NetFile Users Can’t Resist Cheating! :CRA SOTW
they all reference Canadian Revenue Agency and Alan Baggett. I've asked him why he posts these to a US tax forum, and his response was 'oh, I didn't know that'. Kevinh5
--That was not the whole reply! It was also recommended that a Canadian venue be pursued and I pointed out that the only venue was google's can.taxes where few posts have anything to do with taxes.
What you should be aware is that many US tax professionals deal with Canadians, Canadian Tax Law and the Canadian Revenue Agency. As such they need to know the ins and outs of dealing with same.
I'm assuming that you are just a local book keeper who only deal with locals and small businesses. I think that its great that you're helping people out BUT as the US becomes more intertwined with global affairs they will need to be apprised of the tax laws of all nations, not just the their own. Many US tax professionals have a global perspective. If you want your business to grow from its small stature you will need to take a broader perspective.
Finally, if you find the posts are 'illegal' than please report them. BUT if you don't like them simply because they are not of interest to you then wouldn't it be best to just not read or respond to them?
Thank you-----
Vandalism (some accidental, perhaps; some on purpose)
It seems that Alan Baggett has edited the content of my August 7 post to your Talk Page - this is the post where I was questioning the appropriateness of his participation in TaxAlmanac. His edit of my post was not authorized by me, and I would appreciate it if you would revert his changes so that my original post will be recovered. He has also edited a comment (that was about him) that Kevin left on your Talk Page last week.
He appears to be trying to respond to the issues that I was raising, although at times he writes as though he believes you were the author of my comment. I don't think he realizes that I was writing to you, as moderator, about a concern that I had then, and which has been magnified now. I remain convinced that his posts are out of place here, that he is taking advantage of TaxAlmanac, and that it is not in our best interests (as a community) to let it continue.
TaxAlmanac's popularity continues to grow, and as that happens more and more people are going to see it as a place to get "published" on the cheap, or as an easy way to drive traffic to their own websites. If it's up to the community to set some additional guidelines so that we have a good balance of participation - people should be willing to give at least a little before trying to capitalize on their participation here, and self-promotion, whether direct or indirect, shouldn't count as "giving" - then I would be willing to try to get something started.
Also, Dronc has been back. I removed the spam again, but I'd like your permission to copy and paste the legit contents of that discussion to a new discussion, after which the one he keeps posting to can be deleted, or at least labelled as a spam catcher and moved somewhere with less user traffic.

I really have no problem in moving, except that chat is never read.

Mild spamming
User Sushan520 has left three spam posts over the last week – Natalie deleted one and I took care of the two latest ones. Sushan should probably be either warned or banned…

Change User Name
Hi Tim Doyle,
I'm Brad Ayres and I have set up my user name as BradAyres. I'd like to change that to just Brad if that is available. Second choice would be Bud. Third choice would be BradA. My email address is BradAyres@comcast.net.
I'm just starting to use Tax Almanac and like it so far. What is the best avenue to take to help me get the most out of this resource?
Thanks in advance for your help, Brad Ayres
Tim,
I am a CPA in NY. Last year I prepared 1,500 returns using Proseries. I am merging with 2 other firms that use Lacerte and Ultra Tax. We are debating which software to use. I think Proseries will be sufficient. We will prepare over 3,000 federal returns (Business & Personal) next year. What do you think? Our latest vandal
On Sunday, bikestemple6 replaced the user-provided links at the top of the Business Growth Community forum with an ad for fancy bikes. Maybe he thought it was a forum for his *own* business growth?
I reverted his changes, but perhaps you’ll wish to block or warn….

disappearing messages
I keep trying to leave a message on talk and they seem to just disappear when I inavertanly hit a key. Boom - gone. Why is it so sensitive? It's frustrating to get to the end of a long post and ... zap - it's gone.

Proper way to handle Copyright Violations
Tim, user Lance Wallach continues to post copies of articles he has authored which have appeared in various professional accounting journals. Even though he is the author, doesn't he need each journal's permission to post them here? How would TA verify that he has their permission?
I have tired to ask him to not post (what I consider spam) his copyrighted material here, but to leave a link to the various online articles instead, and I have deleted posts that I think are copyright violations. Could you please correct me if I am wrong? I will go back and restore all of those posts if I am. And is there another way of communicating to him that he ought to tone down the spamminess of his posts?
The subject matter to which he is indeed an expert is of limited interest to most users here. It might be useful for someone to have access to his expertise, but how do we ask him to write it so that it is neither self-promoting spam nor a copyright violation? I personally believe that he is only posting here in order to increase his own speaking (and article writing) business. I left him a message on his user page but it didn't appear to have any effect.
Here is our vote: Discussion:Is this SPAM or a Copyright Violation?

How Do I Change User name
Tim, I would like to change the name that shows on my discussion participations from "FredCampo" to "FSC". Change user name
Tdoyle, I was referred by Tillian, who responded to my question about changing the user name. When Tax Almanac first started I signed up using an email address I knew intuit had on file. Since I have a long history with Intuit I thought it would be linked...Not the case.
Would you please change my user name to a much shorter name, keeping the history? I am not sure what the criteria, however, Mitch, CBS, 1040Tax would be great. My member# is 9146.
Thank you in advance Mitch 11:30, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Shorter Name
Hey Tim,
hope things are great for you, wanted to opt for a shorter name "Donnie C" or just "Donnie" if it's available, got a message a while back that my name was too long, let me know if you can take care of that and I'll see you on TA soon!
p.s. my name right now is Donniecastleman
Change username
My current username is Amcw7760, ID 29473. I would like to change it to AEM CPA (or AEM_CPA if I need the underscore). Thanks.
(UPDATE) Thank you for making the change. Everything is copacetic.
Six Sigma
Hi Tim,
Looking at your profile, I see you are a 6 Sigma Black Belt. I retired from Caterpillar as a Black Belt ... enjoyed working on projects around the world. I am now a Snowbird doing seasonal tax work ... it is something to keep the mind active. I have often thought that 6 sigma would be useful in tax preparation to improve productivity and quality, but to the best of my knowledge, no one is using it. Is Inuit using it for tax preparation process improvement?
I created my own 6 sigma designation in my profile :) It ought to be one of the recognized categories.
Regards, Dave

TA's Ongoing Problem
What is it going to take to get you to CHANGE THIS BOARD FROM UNWANTED POSTERS?
Lately I have been seeing more college student homework posters, repeat DIY questioners that distract and frustrate those of us who are using this board for the reason it was intended.
Seems like anytime there's controversy on this board - you disappear as if you don't exist, or claim "there's nothing I can do about it".
I don't believe Intuit pays you to do nothing.

Ongoing issue
Tim,
Over the last several days, we have seen several posters who have circumvented forum rules and posted questions that are DIY questions. The consensus of many of the professionals here is these type of questions are not in the spirit of the forum. This is billed as, "The free online tax research resource and community for tax professionals" and while I realize the "Basic Questions" link steers them to Turbo Tax's website, they figure out how to ask a question anyway. So we really need to set up a DIY section. This will stop the polluting of the main forum with DIY questions. I know many of us have said we would go to that forum and assist those taxpayers. Count me among those who volunteer to do so.
I imagine with the slumping economy that this issue is going to get worse as many will claim they cannot afford a professional tax preparer, so naturally they will come here looking for "free advice". Let's work together and solve this issue before tax season is upon us. Thanks. TomTaocpa 14:01, 25 November 2008 (CST)
Why Haven't You Responded?
I left message with you about a week ago - because we're getting garbage on this forum - more homework/term paper help questions, DIY free advice questions. If you want to make this an open free forum, THEN DAMMIT - SAY SO. DON'T WASTE OUR ENERGY, TIME, PATIENCE, AND PLEASURE OF USING THIS BOARD FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELONG HERE.
MOVE YOUR BEHIND AND TAKE ACTION.
