property available for rent - loss on sale
Dear Marcilio: Taxpayer was planning to rent. How does it make difference? How to report those different cases? Thanks.
Plans don't mean anything. Action does. If the owner had taken the action to put the house up for rent by getting a permit from the city, placing an ad or contracting with a placement agent, then that would be evidence that the property was available for rent. At that point, expenses on the property would be deductible on Schedule E, even if there was no actual rental income.
