real estate professionals
my interest was piqued by your comment that rental property income earned by a real estate professional might be treated as earned income. do you meant that rental income and the gain from the sale of a building might be subject to self-employemtn tax - or the gain would be taxed as ordinary and not capital?
thanks marlasg
Yes for a dealer in real estate. Property is inventory and sale of property is ordinary income. For example, the dealers I work with who subdevelop properties treat land sales and building sales as ordinary income subject to se tax. To declare it otherwise, they must be able to prove an investment motive.
Politics - 'tis the Season
Larry, you may notice that I asked people who wanted to respond to your Sept 10 post on the "Politics - 'tis the Season" discussion to do so on a different discussion, i.e., the "election tax plans" discussion. I did not want Natalie's discussion, which is about how to avoid political discussions, to be come about politics instead (which is what happened the last time somebody brought up the stuff you posted about).
I'd originally asked you if you would be willing to move your comment (about the candidates' positions on the Bush tax cuts) over to the "election tax plans" discussion, or willing to have it moved with your approval. But since the discussion has been brought back on track by now, it's probably no big deal. If you're interested in moving it anyway, since your post would actually fit quite well over on that other discussion, you could do it as follows: edit the discussion the post is on, copy the text of the post, and then delete it from that discussion. Save the edit you just made. Go over to Chat, click on the other discussion, and start a new post. Paste the text into that post, and save it.
Thanks,
