Long User Names Should Include Spaces

Hi, I know you've been a member of TaxAlmanac for quite some time, but I thought I'd mention that TA now recommends that members not use their e-mail address as their user name, since it gets shown on multiple pages on the boards (you're exposing your e-mail address to spammers).

In addition to that, long user names without any spaces really mess up the format of the discussion board. There are some examples of that right on the first few pages of the tax forum topic list, but for an extreme example of the problems created by long user names, see page 40 of the tax forum. The long user name stretches out the "creator" and "last poster" columns to fit, and the "topic" column - which should be the widest - has to shrink to make up the difference. Click over to page 42, and you'll see a good example of how having spaces in a user name allows the name to wrap, rather than stretching the columns. (If you are reading this more than a day or two after Nov 19, those page numbers may not be exactly correct, since new posts push the old ones back.)

There are two ways to "change" your user name:

1. You can just start anew with a shorter user name (or a long one with strategic spaces every 6 to 10 characters, so it'll wrap within the column), and abandon this one (copy your profile from here to there).

2. To retain your existing user history, you need to contact the moderator, Tim Doyle. Give him the new name you'd like to start using, and if it's available, he'll set it up and transfer all of your history. This can take some time if he's busy with other priorities.

Thanks,
