Non Businees Bad Debt Loss from Monies stolen by Nigerian Scammers (419 Advance Fee Fraud)
Janie,
This has been discussed with the FBI. All they can do is take the information from the client regarding the transaction with the Nigerian Scammer. They will not issue him any report. Just their business card. The police Department can be contacted as well to report a theft. Nigeria will not cooperate with an authorities in the U.S. The client is providing me with the documentation of each incident with Nigeria that will show the wire transfer of monies. With proof that this has been reported to authorities, what do you see as far as any tax deduction? 22:15, 25 Aug 2005 (CDT)~~
It appears to be a theft loss--as opposed to a bad investment--because it appears the funds were not used to support a business activity. Had the funds been so used, you would not face so many obstacles in obtaining documentation of where the funds went or how they were used. I think the theft loss deduction is appropriate.
Good luck!Janie 13:29, 30 Aug 2005 (CDT)
