User name should not be an e-mail address

Hi, and welcome back to TaxAlmanac, the free online research resource and community for tax professionals.

Before you post to - or start - any discussions, please sign up again with a different user name and use that new name from now on. You're exposing your e-mail address to spammers when you use it as your user name, as it gets shown on multiple pages on the boards, and because of that TaxAlmanac recommends that you do not use your e-mail address as your user name. Also, e-mail addresses tend to be longer than the average user name - yours is significantly longer than average - and long user names can negatively affect the format of the discussion boards.

You can just start anew with a different user name (preferably fewer than 10 characters, using lower case when possible), and abandon this one. (Just sign out with this name, and then when you go to log in again, click create a new account and run through the process again.) Then be sure to update your user page on the new account to provide some information about your background/level of experience as a tax professional.

Editing to add: We can also do a user name change for you; that would carry over all of your prior user history from June of 2006 into the new name. It takes a few steps and would require you to log out for a while so I can get it done, but I'm happy to do that for you - just leave a note on my user talk page with your preferred new user ID (e.g., sfhurrell, or whatever!). To get to my talk page, click on my user name below and follow the links.

Replaced your California Tax Payments discussion

The new one is here: Discussion:California_Tax_Payments.

Sorry to have to do that to you; as I mentioned in passing above, long user names can mess up the formatting of the discussion boards, and yours was really stretching out the "creator" and "last poster" columns, leaving no room for the topic. I'll be back w/more details - but meantime wanted to be sure you had the link to the new discussion.

Thx, Trillium 12:52, 30 July 2009 (CDT)

Edited to add: Here's a longer, less breathless (!) explanation of what the deal is:

We have many users with small screens, or who prefer to be able to tile their windows on the screen to see many windows at once, and for them, any long user name (more than about 10-12 characters) stretches out the "creator" and/or "long poster" name to the extent that the "topic" column becomes very compressed; all the discussion titles wrap to numerous lines, and it makes it harder to read the list of discussions. There have been several complaints about this over the time I've been here - and not just from me!

As a result, we've asked Intuit to change the presentation of the discussion forum index so that it truncates long names, but as this would take some doing by the programmers, and isn't a user-modifiable thing, it may be a while before it gets done - not least because the users have other improvements they'd like to see, too! Tim Doyle, the moderator, is working on another way to fix this issue, too.

In the meantime, we try to "police" the board for long user names, and when we see them we make sure that they're not interfering with the usability and enjoyment of the board. To do that, someone may just post a new comment to the end of a discussion, if the long-named poster simply added a post to an existing discussion, or we may even have to start a new discussion to replace one that was started by somebody with a long user name.

I know it's strange to have your name disappear from the "creator" list on the discussion forum index, and I apologize for zapping your discussion and replacing it with a new one. If you log out of this ID and create a new shorter one, once you've copied your profile over from the old ID to the new one, add a post to the replacement discussion - that'll get it into your user history and will help you find it more efficiently if you come back in the future.

Let me know if you want other info/help.

Your Name Change Request

Hi, Sue - I can handle the name change request for you, and it looks like the name you requested, CPASue, is available. If you're planning to log off now, I can do the change right away.

The next time you come back to the site, use the new name to log in, with your original password. You'll see that your user name and history have transferred over from the old name to the new one.

Two cautions: (1) If you accidentally log in with the old name, it will reactivate but won't have the name/history, so you want to be kind of conscious of not using the old name any more. And (2) if you're planning to come back in right away, it's best to close your browser windows and preferably quit the browser before logging in with the new name.

Thanks very much for going through with the new name - it'll help out immensely!

Your name change is now complete

Hi, Sue - the name change you requested has been made.

From now on, please log in with the new name, CPASue, using the original password. All of your user history, along with your user profile and preferences, have been transferred to the new name.
