My name is David McRee. I am a CPA in St. Petersburg, Florida. I started my accounting career in 1996 working for a local St. Petersburg CPA firm that specialized in nonprofit organizations. I worked as an auditor for 6 months, then switched to tax. Most of my time was spent preparing Form 990 and writing "reasonable cause" letters to have penalties abated. I also prepared some 1023's. Of course, during season I prepared lots of 1040's and corporate returns. The firm used ProSystems fx. In 2003 the firm was purchased by a very large southeastern regional firm with a large nonprofit base. In July 2005 I resigned my position and took a break.
I found that after a few months my phone started ringing from small nonprofits who heard that I prepared 990's and 1023's. Also it seemed like everyone I knew was forming an LLC and starting their own business and needed tax and accounting help. So my practice began. I find working for myself to be 1000% more satisfying than working as staff in a large firm and would never go back to that life.
My 1040 clients tend to be self-employed persons in some type of service business, some retirees with significant investment income and good pensions, and a few clients with residential or commercial rental properties.
My LLC / Corp clients tend to be service businesses.
My nonprofit work now centers around preparing Form 1023 and Florida charitable solicitation applications. I work a lot with organizations that should have filed their 1023 many years ago and that should have been filing Forms 990 but have not. My current clients are high school booster clubs, neighborhood associations, small religious organizations, a venture capital organization, a private school, etc. My Form 990 preparation practice is also growing. I write a lot of "reasonable cause" penalty abatement letters (with excellent results). My website is www.form990help.com
I'm working to expand my knowledge of LLC's, S-corps, and partnership tax issues.
I use Intuit's ProSeries and am very happy with it. Much easier to use than ProSystems fx.
This is a great forum.
