Headliner Volume 191
February 5, 2007
The Internal Revenue Service has a program that allows about 95 million taxpayers with adjusted gross income under $52,000 to electronically file their federal tax returns for free over the Internet. Free File is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week starting January 16, 2007.
Free File is offered by the IRS in partnership with the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of leading private-sector tax preparation companies. A recent survey showed that of the 15.4 million taxpayers who have used Free File, 94 percent found it easy to use and 97 percent said they would recommend it to others.
Free File is an easy and secure way to file your taxes:
- Go to IRS.gov and click on the Free File article on the font page.
- Read the information about the program, then click “Start Now” at the bottom of the page.
- Choose a tax preparation company that best suits your specific needs from the list provided or use the interactive “Guide Me to a Service” option to help narrow down the list of companies to fit your tax situation.
Free File benefits:
- Your return will be received and acknowledged by the IRS via e-mail within 24 hours.
- There is less chance for making errors since the math is done for you.
- Most Free File software guides you step-by-step through the preparation and filing process so you will be less likely to miss a deduction.
- You may get your tax refund quicker, usually within 10-12 days if you use the direct deposit feature.
Some companies also offer State return preparation. There may be a fee for this service.
