I've been reviewing instructions on W-2's and I do believe a client received an incorrect W-2.

Box 1 Wages = 72581

Box 15 IL Wages = 72581 (Resident)

Box 15 IN Wages = 18194

Box 15 KS Wages = 2609

Software diagnostics did not catch the error, but Illinois rejected it with reject code 0651.

Can I correct IL with $51,778 or do I have to wait for a corrected W-2? Federal and Kansas efiled returns were accepted (IN has to be mailed).

Thanks

Wonder why Il would reject the return. If he is an Il resident most likely all wages 72581 would be taxed to Il. The other State entries would seem to just show how much of the 72581 was made or earned in the other States.

The Schedule CR was created correctly. I think it was rejected because the total state wages is greater than federal wages - out of state wages.

Thanks for the link, Joro.

You can't alter the W-2 screen but doesn't the state have a form that allows you to adjust the out of state wages which would then adjust down the home state wages?

Laura, the out of state wages were correct. Column A came from 1040 line 7 and is for all wages. Column B is the total of out of state wages from the W2, which was correct. These are the only fields to be altered.

The responder in the link that Joro provided suggested changing the W2 state wages, which is what I did. I asked the client to contact the employer for a corrected W-2.
