Have a client that hasn't lived in Calif in for several years, and requested the military change his resident status to Washington state (no state income tax) when he relocated there. (He's since been reassigned to Virginia...but I digress...) His w-2's still show Calif in box 15, and show state wages in box 16.

Crazy thing is... -0- state tax is withheld in box 17.

Since there are state wages shown in box 16, does this mean we have to file a CA return?

California treats a resident member of the armed forces as a nonresident while he is on permanent assignment outside the state of California.
