To summarize: Paper mills using a chemical pulping process produce a tar like by product called "black liquor." It's a pollutant, but also a great fuel, so the paper mills burn it to produce a large fraction of the energy needed for their processes. Some paper mills have taken to blending diesel with the black liquor and then burning it. In doing so, they produce a better fuel for their needs, and they qualify for a very nice biodiesel refundable credit. |
