I have a client that is struggling with the econmy and inevitable downsizing. The subject of offering her employees an early retirement, with incentive, has been discussed. She is a sponsoring employer in a large group defined benefit retirement plan. So there is no option to change the plan, as a means to her end.

The garden variety early retirement plans where the employees are offered a set amount to "go away" are well known. My question is this - has anyone ever heard of a plan whereby the employees are given the opportunity of bidding on the stipend for their exit? In theory, the employer could then select, from among the bids, the best value in longterm saving vs current cost.
