There are special rules and allowances for truckers. Examples are per diem and fuel credit. Talk with other truckers. They probably have a tax pro that they use. |

One thing that is important for you to know is when you are gone overnight and deduct meals on Form 2106, you are allowed 75% of the meal allowance for the cities and areas you traveled to, instead of the normal 50% of meal allowance--if you are subject to the Department of Transportation hours of service limits (and I believe that most, if not all, truck drivers are subject to the DOT hours of service limits).

Are you an owner/operator or an employee? If the former, I would seriously think of finding a professional who is familiar with truckers. |

I assumed he was an employee, but if he is an owner/operator, he would file Schedule C and still use the 75% rate for meal allowances on the Sch C, providing he is a sole-proprietor and not incorporated.
I agree, DT, he should hire a professional to prepare his taxes. |

Tim - You can look in the 10-4 Magazine for preparers to help you with your tax return, they are familar with trucking :) |
