Back to basics, with write-up/Bookkeeping services, must Financial Statements be prepared? Compiled Financial Statements? Should it be stated on engagement letters?

Whether you prepare financial statements is between you and the client. Does he want financial statements?

If you aren't a CPA, does your state allow you to prepare a Compilation?

I always use engagement letters. Whatever services are provided are spelled out in the engagement letter.

Jamesc: Quickfinder offers a book called "Accounting & Bookkeeping". It has an engagement letter in it for bookkeepers. It's also a great little book that has helped me a lot.

If you are only providing bookkeeping services in order to do tax return preparation, then no financial statement is usually necessary. But yes, indicate in the engagement letter what services you are engaged to perform.

I provide periodic F/S. That way the client "knows" that something has been done and I get paid. Only costs a few seconds, some ink and a few sheets of paper.
