| Yes, I will get on a soapbox again....the times that people were courteous and when the site did not have so many know it all's and now what do we have? I am done pleading and done working a site that has no thought of who is behind a post.
Funny how mad gets spread around and how often you fear typing a question for fear of ridicule or worse yet, downright stupidity. I see changes in some long timers...JR, Dennis, Riley, Kevin...even myself...getting a bit terse but so much for what I think. I work and like to help others...maybe my help is off mark sometimes, maybe I am wrong, but then again a nice response and a suggestion is more helpful. Gone for now.... Sea

| Sandy, I thought my answers were getting nicer. I stayed away for 3 weeks because I didn't want to get mad anymore. | |

| I do agree the tone has changed. We have people now who put things like jokes about women or attorneys in the body of their responses. I think we all need to remember that there are people behind the names, and we should treat them as we would if they were standing right in front of us. | |

| Oh Kevin I did not mean to sound like it was you. Not at all. I am just seeing that we ARE staying away because of some tones here. You are not whom I am referring to nor any of the other names I listed...perhaps I worded it badly. I meant that mad gets spread around and people are starting to sound a little cold and callous.
Sorry if I offended...I have stayed away too because the tone with SOME...not anyone in present company is making me quite ill...hehe

| I too have been unhappy with some of the posts and can help to address the problem. Please feel free to bring any such posts to my attention so I can deal with them. You can leave a message for me on my talk page, or you can contact me privately at taxalmanac@intuit.com. If we work together, we can make improvements here.

| I've wondered whether I should weigh in on this discussion since most of the time I'm either contributing a stupid question, bad joke (sorry Natalie) or other such nonsense.
I've been coming here mostly for the last 10 months or so and I enjoy the board very much. I check it usually first thing when I get on the computer. Anyway, I've noticed some people do have a tendency to be short with others, but sometimes I think the response is justified due to the fact that some people don't search for the answer first. I do admit last week I was on my soapbox about an individual who came here, asked a question, didn't like the answers they got initially and became argumentative. The person didn't like some of the responses received from some of the more experienced individual's on this board. The person did not fill out their profile, so we had no way of telling what this person's background was and was plain brash. I got a little peeved because of their attitude. A few others jumped in because of the tone of this individual. We are professionals, at least those that aren't asking homework questions. We should act professional, but if you come here looking for a group hug and don't get it, you shouldn't be combative. I will be honest and say if I see the same situation again that I mentioned above, my reaction will be the same. In my humble opinion, it will take all of us to change the tone and style of the board. That's one of the reasons I post jokes or something funny now and again. We can't be all that serious now, can we? Tom aka taocpa (fyi, tao are my initials)

| I think we should hold each-other to be professionals and professionals do a little homework before asking questions, so Tom, I think your response was justified. Of course, it also meant that I didn't have to be the bad guy for once. : ) | |

| Tom, some jokes are funny to almost anyone who has a sense of humor. (I know you saw the one from Beth about using the toilet at work.) The ones I was referring to are embedded in responses to a serious question and target a particular group, e.g., "like women, fast and easy" or whatever it was. That kind of response doesn't belong in with a tax discussion. I didn't mean we shouldn't have jokes on here anymore, there are just certain kinds of jokes that don't belong. | |

| Sandy, if you take a break from TA, please come back, i like your (hehe)s. As a short timer, when i first posted, I didn't get many responses, so someone told me to file out my profile, so now i try not to answer posts w/o a profile.
T Doyle, can you make the code of conduct link easily available? There was a post last week that I wanted to link that to, but couldn't find it,

| That was Moi with the liking women fast and easy remark. Wasn't meant to offend and I apologize if that was what I did. I also said in the same post was that was how men liked their women when they were young, but as we mature <yeah i know, mature man is an oxymoron like army intelligence>, we prefer intelligence and sophistication. Again the remark was never meant to offend, but was a little injection of humor.
Yes, we are supposed to be professional, but some lighthearted fun should always be there. When we take ourselves too seriously and we can't laugh at ourselves, ,my oh my, that is a sad time. I understand hurtful, racial and denigrating jokes. but busting chops about various professions. Yes, lawyers are right there above used car salesman. That's right. Lawyer jokes are funny. CPA stands for Car Parking Attendant, Cheapest People Around, Certified Pain in the Arse. All good funny things. I'm a short guy 5'6". hit me with all the short jokes you want. Point is a joke can only be mean and hurtful to you if you yourself allow it to be mean and hurtful. I take much more offense to the uppityness and snobbery that goes on. I don't pretend to know everything and I and others may sometimes ask silly questions. Yes, sometimes I can spend an hour doing research or I can go into a like minded community and spend 5 minutes typing and getting the answer immediately, which while helping me, may also help others. The way people attack students and non practitioners for asking questions, in my opinion is sad. Rather than attack, just don't answer, that’s right ignore the post. If you don’t like what’s on TV, change the channel. Yes, this is supposed to be for professionals, but it's also an open forum. If you want it to be private, make it a subscription and exclusionary forum. This way you'll get rid of the riff raff, including me. Geez, we haven’t even gotten into tax season or the stress of the 120 hour work week and already it’s getting rough. Take a step back, look out the window and watch the kids playing in the snow <no comments you warm weather practitioners> and just be happy. Rantin n ravin

| As I look out my window, Fred, I see rain. Rain, rain, rain. And sometimes I miss the snow, but most of the time not.

| Like I said, wasn't meant to offend and if we want to banter about those things, then calling people stupid and berating them could be considered harassment and in my opinion is more hurtful than a joke. Should we then eliminate any and all joke telling from this forum? Because many jokes can be construed as some form of attack.
I am sorry, I am not one to believe in the sanitization of society. I strongly believe in the golden rule, I don't believe in saying hurtful things, but I also believe that we need to be less sensitive about certain things as well. as for here, no rain, no snow <other than what's on the ground> just bitter northeast cold.
| December 6, 2007 | |
| Well, our society has changed, hasn't it? One can be sued for just about anything these days. (And please do not think I am one who would be bringing forth a suit. I am way on the other end of the spectrum of that one.) I certainly do not want to see jokes eliminated from this forum, just a little more discretion. | |
| 6 December 2007 | |
| I'm not worried about being sued. Wasn't meant to offend. And I can't promise I'll be able to use discretion. Never been too good about being bright. ;-) | |
