We're getting ready to go paperless and trying to get everything together and planned out. Do we need 8879 e-file signature authorization to be ORIGINAL hard-copy or can we scan this into the computer and that would be ok per IRS?

This might be the only form (IF) that would have to be original... if anyone knows thanks

W2's and 1099R's is all that I'm aware of.

I would also say any 1099's with federal income tax withheld. Any forms which show withholding I keep.

I know that we have to keep w2's and all papers that state income & w/h... my question *was* do we have to keep the original signature 8879 or are we allowed to store it electronically and shred the original signatured one.

I found the answer if anyone needs it, answer is we're allowed to keep any and all documents in an electronic storage, even the 8879 (which was my original question)

Geez. Picky picky. We answered your question. You just didn't realize it....! I have very few orig. sign. 8879's anyway. They come by fax.

LOL thanks JR1 :) What I meant by original is the actual one they signed, with the real ink on that paper... but I guess an original can mean any unaltered document (even if its a copy) right?

JR...PLEASE tell me you don't eat brains....I have fun from time to time in the grocery store *too much time on my hands I guess* and they actually SELL canned brains.....in MILK gravy.....ewwwwwww

Our computer people claim that Fujitsu makes the best scanners.....for whatever that's worth.....

I concur with regard to Fujitsu. The reason I like them is that they come bundled with and scan directly to Adobe PDF, not a compatible software, which results in a much smaller PDF file size. The other software just doesn't match up.

Sandy - you really don't want to know about cracklin's. Ate some by accident once. My grandmother had mixed them in with the cornbread. After that I spent a lot more time in the kitchen keeping an eye on what she put in the food.

HEHE: My grandmother made cracklin bread too. And cracklins and she made other nasty, nasty things with pork....that is the reason that I mentioned the brains and eggs....

Leave it to the original FL crackers to come up with disgusting ways in which to cook a pig....hehehe

My grandmother was in Mississippi. Trust a Southerner to know about about eating gross things. I had nightmares as a child just seeing a cow tongue in the grocery (all blue and you KNEW it was a tongue - GROSS!!) Getting nauseous just thinking about it.

My grandma had a whole Pig on her kitchen counter one day when I got home from school. She made hogs head cheese, brains and eggs for grandpa, cracklins, cracklin bread and even got Lard to fry fish he caught....

You see beef tongue in fine restaurants even....I am NOT eating a tongue!!!!!

Give me a steak or a nice clean piece of chicken and I am happy :)

The tongue is actually good. Found out by accident...eating corned beef at a party, and after about the third sandwich somehow learned it was tongue.Other than the odd shape, couldn't tell the difference. Of course, it was sliced when I saw it!
