Great idea for a new discussion room.....

I opened my firm in Sept '05. The first tax season resulted in 60 returns (4 business returns) and I have 3 small businesses that I do everything for....ie, cash management, monthly reporting, payroll , taxes, and analysis. I pitch it as " I'm an hourly CFO". I am relatively young, accounting competent, and extremely ambitious. I have set this firm up "on the side" (turnaround consultant by day)and hope to build my income to be able to support me for 6 months before I go "full time".

There are 3 things I have done which have resulted in, what I think, is a large number of tax clients in the first year.....

1) I hired a highly qualified tax prepare to complete ALL tax returns being completed this year. All I did was sell, sell, sell... It results in less money now but, I anticipate tripling in clients every year for at least 3 years.

2) Myself and a few other "professional services" business owners formed a group which refers all of our existing and new clients to each other. For example...there's a realtor in the group. Once a first time homebuyer purchases a house...they need to take advantage of deductions.....he refers me automatically.......on the flip side, everyone I know that needs a house gets him referred.

3) CONFIDENCE!!!!!!! No one wants to be the lab rat... I tell EVERYONE, business is GREAT, its growing SO FAST..so on, so forth.... if I can make them think "I'm the man" then they will tell others that....CONFIDENCE!!!

Any helpful advice will be welcomed...especially from people who are "transitioning" like myself.

I add the craigslist.org website because it's the best marketing tool that worked for me this year.

Sfrey006, you are doing great!! 60 returns the first year! I only did 15!!!!

It is very true that referrals is a good way to grow a tax business. It takes time though...

Hello everyone - I've made a few changes to the page and the underlying support tools. Instead of being named 'user group', I've changed it to 'Community' - sounds more welcoming and less technical. I hope everyone was able to follow along as I made the changes. If you were navigating the group pages when I was making the changes, you could have received an error or have been directed to a non-existant page.

I'm also happy to see a few people jumping in and adding links, etc. - Thank you!

These communities are really new,and we're learning what they are and need to be. Feel free to add any ideas or suggestions here. Remember that this is YOUR community!

Thanks!

Each person who creates an account / logs in to TaxAlmanac has a user page. Simply click on your name on the very very top line. That will take you to your own user page. Then click on the edit tab and add {{Grow}} to that page and save. If you can't figure it out, just say sign me up here and I'll edit it for you.

Also, there is a compliment website called www.bloglines.com that will search Craigslist without you even doing it. For example, I want to see everyone who provides accounting services in my area. I dont have time to check each day and I dont want to see the posts that I have already seen. So you set it up (read how to do it on the site) where it searches for you everyday by the keywords you put on it. Not many people know about this but it is set up with Craigslist. Tell me if you need help and I will see try to be more specific. Search the site first though!!! www.bloglines.com

Later you all and lets keep this up....

DSign me up. thanks. I also network with a couple of insurance companies and payroll companies that we refer cleints to one another. Sfrey if you don't mind me asking, how do you pay your tax preparer? Hourly? Commission? Who reviews and signs the returns? I turned away business this year the last two weeks, just did not have the time. Am thinking that next year about hiring a temp for the last month. Do any of you have experience in hiring temps for tax prep?

I pay mine $50 per hour. For that rate you get the best. Do not turn down business, Just extend them at the end. Tell new clients taht show in April " If you can get an appointment NOW with a tax preparer....he is probably no good. All the good ones have filled up their schedule. Lets extend and I will be able to do a great job for you in May".

I just started a CPA firm the end of January. I have found it tough to actually sign up new write-up clients. We use lists to call on new businesses and existing businesses offering our services. I have gotten some tax clients out of the sales calls we have made. It seems that a lot of people just open the doors to a business, but have no clue to the accounting side of it and aren't really interested. Or at least, they have no sense of urgency unless it is tax time.

Hello All! I just found this group! Cool! I am looking forward to reading the posts, but got to go back to doing tax forms. I have just opened my business a year ago and it is slow going. If I don't get more revenue within the next 6-9 months, I will have to get a day job!!!!!

MsTwizz - make some calls to CPA's & bookkeepers in your area. See if they need help. Sub-work can help keep the wolves away while you're growing your practice. Can also develop into good networking.

Actually, I am getting some referrals from the other local CPA firms in my town. But I do need to call them and remind them that I can do more.

Good idea!
