| The State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet is printing with the federal tax return to be filed by mail with the IRS. It says at the top of the worksheet "Keep for your records," and I cannot find anywhere in IRS instructions for Form 1040, line 10, where the worksheet needs to be attached even if a refund is determined to be not taxable. So, why is it printing with the copy of the return to be mailed to the IRS? | |

| go to the Turbo Tax website, this site is for professional preparers only
professional preparers would never use Turbo Tax

| but out of respect for your profile, I'll answer:
Turbo Tax prints out gobs and gobs of worksheets in an effort to dazzle the masses with bullshit It even prints out copies of W-2s and 1099s. How useful is that (when you already have the original in front of you)?

| Kevinh5, Thanks for taking a stab at my question even though I no longer use professional jargon, like "b******t." I have this question on https://ttlc.intuit.com/ but, as you can imagine, the questions on this topic are along the lines of "What is a State and Local Tax Refund?" I am not trying to print the Copy for Taxpayer with "gobs and gobs of worksheets." I am printing the copy for IRS. I want to assume that this is an Intuit glich to include this worksheet with the return to be mailed to the IRS, but then I don't want to get a CP2000 saying where is your 1099-G state tax refund. The worksheet would answer that question for them. Maybe someone out there could lower themselves to answer a TurboTax question for a former member of the elite "professional preparers" society. | |

| Ten, I did answer it for you. maybe I'll make it clearer: NO you don't need to attach it, just keep it for backup. It is just something Turbo Tax prints for the uneducated so that they will feel that the return prepared by their do-it-yourself software didn't miss something. It is marketing, pure and simple, or as we professionals call it, Bullshit. Not a glitch, but an on-purpose razzle-dazzle. | |

| and I did only answer "out of respect" after I read your profile and saw that you are a retired tax pro | |

| Well, I called Intuit and talked to Mark in TurboTax Support (800-268-9062). He said that this appears to be an error in the software and that this worksheet should not be flagged for printing with "All official forms required for filing." They will address it for the 2008 tax year. But then again, maybe he's just uneducated also. | |

Quoted for truth I use Lacerte at work and Turbotax at home just to keep my personal return off of the network at work and to do some friend's returns. Turbotax is painful to use for a preparer who knows where the numbers should go.

| I do proformas at work in TT. I just use the forms. Of course, some things won't work right if you don't go through the interview. But I do so many of the damn things I know which things they are. I didn't answer the question because of the DIY ban and I figured he could ask TT. BTW, the program this year (2007) sucks and I've found multiple state errors so far. | |

| J writes "I've found multiple state errors so far. " Do you know if the same errors exist in Lacerte & ProSeries? I would not think that Intuit has separate development staffs writing the same tax routines ... the routines would be modules reused in all three programs. Of course, there is always the possibility of errors in how the data is inputed or displayed as output from the routines. | |

| I don't use Lacerte or Proseries, so I don't know. But keep a close eye on the Michigan pension deductions; in TT they do not use taxpayer age as a limiting factor, and pretty much automatically give the deduction. Multiple audits on that one so far, since the DIYer generally doesn't know it isnt' correct (and the refund goes up!!!). | |
