| A new one for me. Client pays her Chiropractor a tip above the actual fee. Client has plently of medical expense to exceed threshold on Schedule "A". Any ideas if she can deduct the tips as a medical deduction? My initial thought was no. But then I started thinking you can deduct a "tip" as part of the business meal cost, so maybe you can deduct this one. On the other hand, it is customary to tip in the restaurant business, not in the medical field. Any thoughts appreciated. | |

| The Dr. is performing two functions here. First, as a medical man, the second as a lothario (where he takes a whole body approach). She can only take the deduction for the tip if she is also in the people pleasure business (as a business expense)i.e. a form of continuing education. | |

| Hey lothario can be a medical profession for the emotionally weak =). I wonder what did the Chiropractor do.... | |

| Pegoo, not to put too fine a point on it, but I think he tickled her fancy. | |

| Tips are not reasonable or customary when paid to a Doctor. | |

| Any medical professional that would accept a tip is someone that you should not go to. The concept is so out of bounds that I would not even start looking for a place to deduct it. | |

| DZ, if she is in the people pleasure business as I alluded to (hospitality industry-oldest profession), I would disagree. It could be for continuing education from the Dr. ---that little extra that the Dr. is providing beyond the bounds of standard chiropractic.
I have all my working girls (and boys) report all income, and take all deductions to which they are entitled. Several clients I had when I first started are in a happy retirement today due to their SS beneifts. Everyone that was audited came thru with flying colors (Service was quite fair in what they allowed as CPE). I have no idea of the facts of the case at hand, but we are after deductions, and will leave no stone unturned. | |

| Sorry people for not clarifying - Real Chiropractor, nothing illegal (in California). Not in the hospitality industry. I do not know why she tips, she just posed the question to me. | |

| Gosh, and I thought I disrespected Chiropractors before. | |
