Time to pull out the sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, and hat! It is cold in this part of the country.

(How can I get icicle effects on the word "cold"?)

Natalie, karma will one day get you for this and send you to Minnesota in Jan/Feb/March. I heard it was 37 below there this a.m. I assume that's with the wind chill (!). Friend of mine who lives there says you have to have two things if you are going to live in Minn - a winter vacation, and a fur coat!

Natalie, my sympathies!!! We have to go up to the top of Mauna Kea to get cold right now - there's lots of snow up there and icy roads and all!!!

We are really happy around here that the Halemaumau crater seems to be pau and we are seeing blue skies, crisp clear horizons and beautiful days. For those of you outside the Pacific Rim - Halemaumau crater is part of the active volcano on the Big Island and has been spewing large and uncomfortable levels of sulfur dioxide into the air for a little over a year now. Pau means it has stopped. Now all you freezy cats can come to Hawaii, boost our tourism, not have your eyes burn, have a lot of fun, plus it's not cold on the Big Island ---YET. And the economy will improve.

That's great news, Action, because I'll be on the Big Island this weekend!

It was in the 80's at So California today. Got to go to Park City , Utah for some skiing this week to cool dowm before tax season starts. Feb 1st countdown continues.

I had to drag the tar pots out into the cotton fields this weekend to keep the crop from curling before I get it picked. A cold snap like this could ruin any chance that my cotton will take a permanent press.

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

January 14, 2009
Tar pots . . . I'm starting to wonder what kind of childhood you had Crow!

Skiing sounds like fun. I'd have to dig the mittens and long johns out for that, though.

I have this theory. I think something happens to people's blood when them move to Hawaii from colder areas. It's just not the same anymore. My freshman year in college the first day back to school after winter break, it got up to 54 degrees. (Normal was probably around 5.) I was ready to break out the shorts! Now when it hits 54 degrees, I'm ready to break out the winter jacket!

CrowJD (talk|edits) said:

Ha. No Natalie, you light the tar, and it keeps your crop warm. Haven't you ever worked in an orange grove?

I don't like you ladies. From now on, I am just going to use you for my own personal pleasure thoughts and not allow you to share in the enjoyment. hmmmmmphhhh

Belle (talk|edits) said:

January 14, 2009
Fred, don't include me in there with Natalie & Action. It's currently 22.5 degrees here and I have on long socks & boots. Perhaps Natalie could share her hand-me-downs,

Fsteincpa (talk|edits) said:

14 January 2009
Belle, while you are indeed a lady, i am only including those ladies, and i am now using the term as loosely as i can, that are located in Hawaii.

Belle (talk|edits) said:

January 14, 2009
Ah, thanks for that clarification.

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

January 14, 2009
Crow, I've been in apple orchards but not orange groves. Tar is bad enough when it's used on the road though. I wouldn't even think of setting it on fire.

Ahh Fred, a little jealous? By the way, did you ever help Action with her house remodeling?

Well, I guess I'm going to have to warm up my little tootsies near the volcano this weekend.

Fsteincpa (talk|edits) said:

14 January 2009
Jealous is a petty word. I have just made the positive choice to not think of you in regards to weather. I will go forward thinking of you only in other ways. This way we can both be warmed.

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

January 15, 2009
Ohhh yeah. You are TOO MUCH Fred! But you didn't answer my question.

The cold was the reason why I moved from Denmark to Southern France.... And from Southern France to Hawaii. It's sooo cool to be able to wear mini skirt all year long (o;

Oh Nathalie, you can drive up to Mauna Kea and snowboard all day long.

Actionbsns (talk|edits) said:

15 January 2009
Natalie, the answer to your question is that not only did Fred not help with remodeling, he didn't help paint, or move, or clean up afterwards. And BTW Fred, if you are interested in redeeming yourself, the carpet layer did such a bad job in our new house, they are replacing it and we need to "move" for a day or two soon so they can put the new stuff down. We could really use some help with the furniture. Maybe Tom would like to come and help, too. Like I said, the volcano has stopped spewing so much junk into the air and the views and weather have been outstanding up here lately.

Oh, for crying out loud!!!!!

Are we complaining again about cold in a tropical paradise?!

Try living here where it's currently 38 degrees!

Tom, you should be enjoying your 38 degree heat wave. It's 15 degrees outside my office in northeast PA. It's not expected to climb into the 20's until Sunday. Those are the highs!

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

January 16, 2009
Tom, I can almost hear you say that! Yup, it's cold here alright. We have quite a windchill going on right now. Wind gusts are up to 50 mph or something like that. I would guess that brings the temperature down another 20 degrees. I might have to get my space heater out tonight.

Taocpa (talk|edits) said:

16 January 2009
Well, today it's currently 11 degrees with a high of 22 and a low of 7.

The National Weather Service says it will be 80 today in Hawaii with lows in the 60's. Oy, the life of misery you must lead living in Hawaii.

-11 according to the car on the way into work this morning. Schools are closed because the wind chill brings the temp down to a less than balmy -24 today. Our projected high is 6. It was a real treat taking out garbage this morning and having to stop at the gas station to fill up. Call me crazy but I don't mind it at all. Perfect weather for sitting inside and getting tax things done.

CBSTax (talk|edits) said:

16 January 2009
Tax Guy it was -13 when I left this morning and I live in South Central Ohio. Our high is supposed to be about 6 too and most of the schools have closed. I'm looking forward to the 20s next week.

Fsteincpa (talk|edits) said:

16 January 2009
-11 here and action - please be careful how you phrase your questions to me. You sooooo know how easily my mind can shoot off on tangents.  ;-)

And Natalie, i do not get jealous, i just make conscious decisions to change negative thoughts into positive thoughts such as the ones that philia put into my head. all you hawaiin ladies are now perfectly entrenched in my thoughts in some lovely miniskirts happily bouncing around preparing taxes.

Actionbsns (talk|edits) said:

16 January 2009
Y'all have to understand the weather in Hawaii. If the average is 80 degrees, then doesn't it just make sense that when it's 20 below, we're REALLY cold? It's just a matter of what it's 20 below of. I have taken some shots from my lanai of a wonderful sunset and if someone will tell me how to add pictures here, I'd be glad to show you what happens when the vog goes away. Not intended as a gloat, it's just that for the last 14 months or so, that same view has been clouded over substantially with vog.

BTW, Fred, the mini skirts have been replaced by jeans and flips here, not to mention age (rats!!!)

Fsteincpa (talk|edits) said:

16 January 2009
Yanno, that's the wonderful thing about mind adventures. I get to see what it is that I want to see. Reality has no place in my mind. And trust me, you're wearin a mini skirt.  ;-)

I don't smoke in the house - wife has me trained to go outside. In the wee hours of the morning it was -1 as I stood in the unheated garage for a nicotine fix. My hands felt like they were burning.

It's times like these that I wish I moved to Arizona.

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

January 17, 2009
Hey, most of the schools on Oahu were closed today, too! It was because of that low-pressure storm. They were predicting we would get winds up to about 60 mph! I guess that would equate to a windchill of about 30 degrees.

Fred, I'm really glad to hear that you keep things positive. It really does make life better, doesn't it?

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

January 20, 2009
Well, I just got back from sunny Waimea on the Big Island. I was too far away to warm my tootsies on the volcano. In fact, it was so cold there that I could see my breath in the house! (No central heating.)

Taocpa (talk|edits) said:

Gee Natalie,

It's a nice warm 18 degrees this morning in our Nation's Capital, with a high expected of 32 degrees.

And no, I am not going down to the Inauguration. Too many people, too cold and the place is locked up tighter than Fort Knox (though I do have a great contact that could get me around all that).

Taocpa (talk|edits) said:

Natalie,

Supposedly 68 degrees, but the dog door flap broke recently so cold air just blows right in!

Tom

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

January 20, 2009
Well, I must admit I think it got up to 68 degrees outside, but it was darn cold INSIDE!

How about using some of that fancy gray tape that seems to work even on cars? (Now I remember -- it's called duct tape.)

My office is usually freezing. We wear warm socks or slippers (real ones, not flips) and a sweater most of the time. The AC unit is mounted on the roof right above my office and we get the full blast of cold air. Right now, at my house, it's cool outside and I'm wearing sweats and socks to be warm. Can't see my breath yet, but it's close!

Up until this week, when I would post in the hour between 8am and 9am EST, I'd be practically the only person on the board [sometimes Roy would be about] but as the season picks up steam, looks like many are joining in and rendering their judgments.

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

D&T, that's funny. Did you read the first post? At first I thought you were going to say something about the icicles forming on your windows.

In any case, I agree with you. Soon I will be able to tell when it's time to go to bed because you'll be signing on for the new day!

I can't remember a winter that has been this cold for this long. I went on the porch for a well deserved cigarette break (I don't smoke in the office) and the frigid wind cut through me like a knife. I think we're back into the single digits outside.

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

February 6, 2009
RG, maybe the cold is a good thing for you. If it's too cold outside, you won't want to go out as often to smoke, right? So this might be a good time to quit.

Rgtaxservice (talk|edits) said:

6 February 2009
Tax time is usually the time I try to quit...but it never really happens. I cut back alot but once spring rolls around I tend not to think much about quitting. I'm a die-hard DIY homeowner so I use my 'smoke break' as a time-out when I'm overloaded on the house projects.

How cold does it get in Hawaii? I just returned from spending my day at my client's office in the Kohala area and doing that requires I drive the only major highway we have here and from there you have a splendid view of Mauna Kea. It is STILL snow capped, and has been since Christmas. So you could drive to the observatories for a visit, wear your really cold clothes, and then drive on down to the water and do a whale watching cruise. BTW, as I was leaving my client, whose office is right on the water (they do whale watches), there was a whale offshore playing, spouting, and gently rising in and out of the water. It didn't truly breach, though. That's what I'm waiting to see up close.

Natalie (talk|edits) said:

When I was there last month, I got to see all three major peaks with snow on them.
