Can anyone tell me how long the IRS retains copies of a taxpayers tax return and the best way to request copies?

Don't know how long the IRS keeps taxpayers' records, but you can request copies by sending in Form 4506. The current fee for a copy is $39.

I find e-services much quicker. You get the info immediately most of the time. taxea

Thank you both, I did a little research and found out that you can typically get the current year and 6 years back.

I just had to request the IRS research their system for gift tax returns that a client filed. The client died last year and we are preparing the estate tax return and need copies of the 709s that he filed before he was our client.

We wrote the Cinncinati office and then they called us back after they researched it. She said that they are required to keep 75 years of back returns. She was able to tell us that gift returns were on file as far back as 1979 for my client. Once she told me which years were on file we then had to file the Form 4506 for each year. A long process, but seems to work efficiently.
