I am divorced with 2 kids living in the US but not a permanent resident. I would like to apply for a Tax ID, so I can start paying tax. Do I have to apply for my kids? if so how do I go about doing it.

Go to www.irs.gov, and type in W-7 in the search menu. This form allows you to apply for an Invididual Tax Indentification Number (ITIN). You must also fill out 2 other W-7s for each child if they do not have social security numbers either. You then attach those to your tax returns with some personal documents that the instructions for the W-7 informs you to use.

Any questions, call the IRS and I am sure they would be glad to help. They get a commission for new tax payers paying Uncle Sam. No just kidding :).

Melissa;

Are you working in the US? Do you have a green card or visa allowing you to work in the US? You may be required to have a SS # if you are paid wages, so depending on the type of income for reporting purposes you may need either the ITIN as BJ said or a SS #.
