| Tax exempt client, 501(c)(6), needs a copy of their exemption letter. (I am at least their 3rd accountant. I have copies of 990's since 1999. Client needs copy to get discount.)
How do I get a copy, and which method is the quickest? (Form 4506-A only gets Forms 1023 or 1024. The vendor wants the letter to support the discount.) Were older tax exempts grandfathered and in which year? (This orgainization might have been started pre1980.) Thanks for the help. | |

| Just have the client call the IRS Tax Exempt division and request a copy of their determination letter. Usually takes a couple of weeks. If there is no copy of the letter, the IRS will generally send a statement confirming that the organization is not a private foundation and that contributions to it are tax-deductible. | Or in this (c)(6) organizatation's case, that contribs are not tax deductible, but will confirm tax-exempt status. | |

| If you need quick results will the client not be listed in the Treasury's digest of tax exempt organizations? Most university libraries have one, you could copy the cover of the book (very official looking), and the page the client is listed on (it is all alpha). | |
