Mailed in a return with an erroneous SSN. What's the best way to correct this error?

My suggestion would be to either wait and see if they get a letter -then you can usually call IRS and give correct one....or do an amended return....only thing with that is, it could get process much later, and you could still end up getting a letter stating ss# is wrong/doesnt match, etc.

They might fix it for you based on client last name and the actual SS number you used.

I would send in an amended return. The IRS usually processes 1040-X in about four weeks.

BlackRose, I did the same thing. I prepared 2004 and 2005 returns for a new client, they were late, and transposed two numbers. It was caught this week when I tried to e-file the 2006 return. Fixed it for 2006 and the return went through just fine. So I called IRS yesterday to see what to do about it. The person I spoke to suggested waiting for the inevitable letter and at that time we can fix it. He seemed to think doing anything now would be futile since it takes about 6-8 weeks to process the returns. They filed the original returns about a month ago. The biggest problem for me now is having to call them and tell them what happened. As they were leaving my office, they had such confidence in my ability.

That one thing I really like about e-filing you know right away.

If efile bounces then you are ok. you can resubmit with correct number.

However, last year i had one go through where ss# was right but last name was married name instead of maiden. IRS letter was a mess. They backed out everything dealing with the spouse as if they didn't exist. If the efile doesn't bounce. I would send amended.

A 1040X now could mess things up. The original return is virtually certain to reject. IRS then researches true SSN and fixes.

I agree with TxSrv; non efiled returns take time to post and if there is an error, you will be amending a return IRS does not have 'on file'....wait to see if they send a correction of SS #

If the last name doesn't match SS records, mine allways get rejected.

Go ahead and E file return with correct number. It will be processed before the mailed one. The mailed one will be rejected and everything will be just fine.
