| Client has dogs that he has at the mfrg plant each day. He claims all expenses associated with the dogs as security. How do you think the IRS would look at this? | |

| I see no problem with the IRS accepting the expenses for the dogs, if the dogs are there to secure the premises. | |

| What is the purpose of having the dogs at he plant?, are the dogs there to keep him company or are the dogs there for security purposes. If the dogs are there for security purposes then he can deduct the cost of feeding the dogs as they are a business expense | |

| If the dog is a Guard Dog and there is signage on the fences and gates saying Guard Dog at Large, on Duty or something similar then the dog is an expense. I believe you have to depreciate him. 3 years? I know small animals are three years, big ones longer but you can't depreciate anything with feathers. Doesn't that tickle your fancy! | |

| Have been there several times, do not recall any signs on the fences, but there may be one in the office window. Will have to check out the next time I am there. Thank for the info. PS. I think they have about three or four dogs there. | |

| You don't need signs! Never thought of actually writing off the critter before tho'. Usually the food and vet bills. Where's our livestock gal, SW? Wonder what the useful life of a dog is? | |

| Dogs are depreciated over 5 years.
I agree about having no signs. Why warn the thieves with signs? Let them run into the dogs first. | |

| Insurance policies however require you to have a sign posted if you have a dog meant for security............ | |
