My client a non-US citizen / resident, last year married to an US citizen, has applied SSN. Together with the spouse, they want to file MFJ. My client has'nt gotten the SSN yet. I looked in IRS website, it says do not apply ITIN if a SSN is being applied. The question is when I use Lacerte, the software insists on a SSN or an ITIN. I cannot leave it blank. Any suggestion?

Thanks,

Will it let you enter "applied for"  ?

Nope, we'll just paper file it.

Thanks,

If they file with "applied for", the return will be rejected as incorrectly filed. The spouse without an SSN will be removed and the IRS will assess tax at the MFS rate. That's why the software won't let you do it.

You and your client should wait for the SSN to arrive. Yes, they can wait. They can file for extensions (just the one with an SSN, don't put the applied for person on the extension). They don't need their refund now. They can pay any balance due with the extension.
