Thanks for the info. I was questioning the IRS piece as well as I have heard the same.

Almanacers,

If the taxpayer elects to put money into an IRA or a SEP, can they file the return and wait until the actual due dates to contribute or do they have to contribute before they file?

You can file your tax return before contributing to the IRA as long as they understand that April 15th is the due date to contribute, but I have always counseled my clients to not file if they haven't yet funded the SEP, and I've extended them until I hear that they are ready to fund it. Many times over the years a well intended client calls in September to say they won't be able to do it, and we have to revise the extended return (and the current year estimated taxes).
