One of my client filed joint return, they had social security income and pension income, did not receive thier stimulus check!! They are qualifed to get it by all the criteria as far as I know. I noticed that their 1040 was filed as 1040A, system defaulted to 1040A before I caught it in the beginning. Is this has anything to do with rejection of stimulus check? Any help is appreciated.

The stimulus checks are mailed out by a schedule based on the last 2 digits of the taxpayer's Social Security number. For example, if the last 2 digits of the taxpayer's SSN are 88, the scheduled mailing date is July 11.

But based on their 2 digit, they were suppose to get it couple of months ago. My concern is that filing as 1040A instead of 1040 has anything to do with stimulus check?!

No, filing Form 1040A is perfectly ok. Did they report at least $3,000 in Social Security income?

Yes, It was actually $24,535. But the taxable amount on the right of the column for SS was zero. I visited IRS website and input all the information for stimulus and it did showed that they are eligible. But no check and they try to call the IRS and were told they are not eligible but did not explain why. I do not understand the reason!!

Unless the taxpayers were claimed as dependents on another taxpayer’s tax return, they should be eligible for the stimulus payment. Also, confirm that each taxpayer has a valid Social Security number.

Have your client contact IRS and press for a better explanation as to why they are not eligible. Maybe it's because they owe back taxes, student loans , child support etc. .etc. One other thing is to make sure you had an entry of $24,535 (gross social security amount ) on the form 1040 A . A potential other reason is maybe your client is one of the 385,000 taxpayers where IRS goofed up.(see article on this website )

Echoing Cotopop above, many programs default to not showing SS at all if it is not taxable.

Just tell them that it is what it is, and they'll get what's coming on the 08 filing. And hang up.

Did you first try "Where is my stimulus check?" on the IRS website. I have one client whose SS # indicates he should have received it in early June, but on that link, they give a date of July 4th for the mailing date of the check?

Was this return timely filed for 2007? If not this changes things to be delayed.

Also, a potential delay is you filed the return with a RAL or rapid refund type of transaction.

Another potential delay is an amended return filed shortly after the deadline. Two clients have called IRS and found IRS has the check they sent with the 1040X but the form has not been processed. In fact, in one case, IRS asked client to send a duplicate copy.
