I've done the research and I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I'd sure like some reassurance. Client reaches 70 1/2 in 2009. Since the RMD has been waived for 2009, I believe she doesn't have to take it until 2010 and only has to take one RMD in 2010. Thanks.

My RIA research agrees. The RMD for 2009 is waived and could have been taken as late as 4-1-2010 under the prior rule.

Now your client only has to take one RMD by 12-31-2010 based on asset values as of 12-31-2009.

There has been no announcement of a waiver for year 2010 .INMHO very unlikely because of the big deficets anticipated .
