I was researching the QB online version and am thinking about converting some of my clients to it so I won't have to drive to their office or transfer files via flash drives since their files are too big to email. Research shows that it won't do everything that the Accountant version (which I'm currently using) does and that there would be a separate monthly charge per client. Is anyone using this and what are your comments on it?

have you looked at www.logmeinfree.com, basically you can log into your clients pc while sitting at your pc, problem is it ties up their pc. good thing is you don't have to purchase every version of QB and have the problems of making sure client A version of QB 2006 is the same as client B QB 2006 (updates).

good Luck !

Looking at lots of options now. Husband will retire in 346 days (but who's counting!) and says he wants to travel some. He says he wants to be a writer so while he's out doing research, I'll be able to keep working. I've got a couple of clients that are computer-literate so I plan to do some tests with them this summer.

I have used it for working on a client's books, and found it very cumbersome. Anytime you want to look at a report, it has a 3-10 second lag time to load. Then, if you want to go to another screen, it has to load that. You can't minimize reports, so it feels like you are constantly waiting to load things. It is annoying if you like to quickly jump between reports like I do. If you don't mind the wait, the convenience factor is nice.

I've got to set up a client on it Wednesday evening. Anything else I need to be aware of vs the other QB softwares?

Have you considered using a remote access set up? One client set it up so that I can go to their website and login to their server directly. For another client I use the Windows remote desktop. They both work pretty well.

The online version of QBs does not support companies that have inventory. There are some other limitations as well.

Natalie - your comments regarding the online version concur with what my research is showing - that it's a nice idea but the program won't do everything that I and my clients would need. Their sales rep says they are working on it but (to me) sounds like it's not the answer for now.

Kritter's comment about lag time for QB's Remote Access I have heard a lot. Is this problem just with QB's Remote Access or is it the same for GOTOMYPC and LOGMEINFREE?

Off topic, I know, but here's a revelation: B.L.'s a girl! Which means what? Well, just a bit of trivia about the T/A community.

Probably means I'd still be a commercial banker if I had gone to the strip joints with my boss and employee. Instead, they went by themselves (numerous times) and my employee spent all night bad mouthing me and plying my boss with liquor and women. Oh well - much happier now and my blood pressure dropped 10 points after I started working for myself.

B.L. - Honestly, the two biggest issues I've had working remotely is that I sometimes lose the connection or the client's server is off. I have absolutely no control over either one of those events. I have never used GoToMyPC or any of those other computer access packages, although I too have heard some are slower than others. If they have trial versions, you might want to start there.

For the client that set me up directly through their website, I think VPN (virtual private network) is used. I used this with another client's database as well. It worked fine. There are a lot of choices are there.

I have a client that is computer literate and wouldn't mind being a test subject. Think we'll give various things a try this summer and see what works best.

I use both Logmein and VPN. Find the speed about the same (I use DSL). I use Logmein primarily because it allows me to drag the client's file (you need the paid subscription for this) to my computer for backup, etc.

Thanks. I get a backup of my clients' info whenever I see them. (Extra service I provide that they think is great that costs me nothing) I like the drag ability.

BL, I use GoToMyPc for as many people as I can get to try it out. Generally we are very happy with it. Recently I did work on a client's laptop computer she had taken with her to California. We are open to trying anyone's software program if they will give me remote access capability. One client has a store in Waimea (38 miles from Kona), she set up remote access for herself from her Kona home and has given me access to the store's computer so my office can work in her QB file. I've been to her store once, she goes in about once a week and it saves a lot of time and gas. One of my client's started using the online version of QB but we were just unhappy with it, I still don't trust it as much as I want to and with the comments above, my opinion isn't changing anytime soon.

Tried QB online. Didn't have the load time problems mentioned above, however not being able to have several QB screens (write checks, register, journal entries, etc) open at the same time was a frustration (must be a bandwidth thing). To convert a desktop version file to an online file, you have to talk to tech support and their software has to do it. They asked what file size I was converting (11,000 kb) and said it would be ready in about 30 minutes. When I tried it in 45 minutes, 2004- June 2006 had converted but the last 12 months had not. Client had to leave for another appointment so I have to schedule another visit to fix this. Tech support wasn't sure what the problem was. When I asked if the internet connection might have broken, they said that was possible. Only solution is for me to visit the client again and try the conversion again. The software is a step backward for those of us that are used to the desktop version but if the capabilities are brought up to the desktop standards, seems like a useful option. I don't know what bandwidth and file size issues there may be though.

BL check out the discussion about FTP downloads under the tax tips forum or leave a message for SandySea on her page. I noticed she uses her own FTP (file transfer protocol) website to work with client files, and it seems to work well for her.
