Ordered with new Dell Laptop for $160, had an older version (1998), we do our own books with. Husband is CPA, Wife is Psychologist. I have 30+ years accounting business. It takes me 30 minutes to an hour to figure out some of the most basic things that need to be done. I cannot believe that Intuit has made this software as unmanageable as it is. I'll get used to it and get what we need out of it.

However, are there any other basic bookkeeping packages on the market that anyone can recommend? I'm basically paying $160 for a checkregister and some basic reports. I will not recommend this software, and am unsure what Intuit is so proud of.

WOW - 1998!?!!

There was a big stink somewhere around 2001 because Intuit had changed the dropdowns and added an additional fee for payroll tax tables. After a couple of months most people had learned the new dropdowns and the stink died down.

Since all you're looking for is a check register and basic reports, you may want to try Quicken but you may find that it is even more cumbersome than QuickBooks.

Intuit is the market leader in bookkeeping software. (I do not own Intuit stock, nor was I compensated for writing that.) I think the reason is clear -- their products generally are very easy to use. I can see how it would be harder to work with, however, if you are approaching it from the traditional accounting package standpoint. You have to realize that QBs was made for people who are not accountants. There's a lot going on behind the scenes. Perhaps what you should do is take a QBs class to get started.

If you want to try something else, there's the Microsoft Business Accounting package. I haven't used it because most of my clients use QBs. Or you can leave a message for fsteincpa. He might have other recommendations.

I agree Sandy. I HATE Quicken. I only suggested it since he's basically looking for a check register. I suspect that someone using 10 year old software is not going to be happy with anything that's currently on the market.

Me too friend. If I hear one more cash register ca ching I think I will shoot myself. Some of my clients use it for the investment features (which are not bad by the way) but to do full accounting with the beast is not my cup of java :)

You can turn that off. I forget how (and their manuals are worse than horrible). Try going to Edit, Preferences, Quicken Program. If that doesn't work, I'll see what else I can come up with.

There is a product called MYOB. It's not too bad.

I do use Quickbooks for my clients. At this point, many don't want to spend big $$$ and if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

The best personal program I ever used was a program called MacMoney. But they won't write one for the Wintel platform. I told them many years ago when Quicken was first introduced they would beat Quicken's pants off. The guy told me he knew it, they just weren't going to compromise and were sticking with Macs. Oh well, too bad for them.

Quicken is made for individual use, that's why the investment tracking feature is pretty good. I agree with the comments about the reports, however. The person printing them really needs to know how to work it. MYOB is okay. It's on about the same level as QBs or Peachtree.
