| I attended a Quickbooks training session recently and this web address was announced by the lecturer who told us that this board was strictly for tax professionals to ask questions to each other for practitioner related issues.
Even your advertising slogan on the opening screen says "Free Online Tax Research Resource and Community for Tax Professionals". You even have disclaimers regarding this in logging in that this site is meant for tax pros. I realize of course that opinions expressed here only give guidance and should not literally be relied upon in leiu of actual tax researching on my own. However, within the past week alone I've noticed the following topics on this board that tend to discourage my relying on this site as a practitioners' resource: 1) An employee of a security company being treated as an outside contractor instead of an employee. 2) An employee being asked by an employer to pay the employer's share of FICA and Medicare because the employer "can't afford to pay it". 3) A student asking a test question on "Accrual Basis" to answer. 4) An employee on a new job questioning outdated payroll withholding tax charts. 5) A CPT in US Army asking about taxation of a bonus. 6) A Fla web development S Corp owner with numerous tax issues he wants answered. I'm sure there are more - but you get the idea. I'm really turned off with this as I feel that if this board is meant for tax practitioners to interact with one another, why are non tax preparers permitted to use this board as well? I took time out of my business to travel to and learn about an Intuit product, and feel that there are many public boards that outsiders can use to get their questions answered. It appears that from the cases listed above, except for #5 who upfront disclosed he's not a tax professional - why should I waste my time trying to read through a scenario for someone else's benefit when this is what I get paid to do for clients? It's not fair to us for Intuit to permit this. I don't mind helping out a fellow professional - but do mind answering a person who is non cognizant of all the tax facts that might be involved in a situation, a homework cheat, a person attempting to short cut things by doing-it-themselves. I see that this issue has been discussed on other post threads, but has just been left up in the air with no conclusion.

| How do you propose to not allow non-professionals to ask questions here? How many times have you answered a question so far? Stick around..you might learn something. | |

Don't. No one has to read all posts or answer any.

| Is this Uncle Sam in disguise? Or are you one of Philly's many Mets fans?

| Of course I did see the chick a couple of weeks ago that asked like 15 questions and pitted CPA against CPA against IRS against her tax guy against everyone else, in my opinion she got a $400 tax return done for free, but that's only once in 4 months that I've seen someone really take unfair advantage of this board. I was the only one that actually chimed in with that opinion but I'm sure everyone was thinking it, just leave it to me to say it. I think it's a great tool to help all of us get just a little bit better at what we do, as no one can be an expert on every single tax topic! | |

| Do not pick on the poor Met fans. Pity they lost, though, the scenario had they won was hilarious. East Division Playoff Monday and then three way for the Wild Card. Do not pick on kittens either. Philly you can pick on. | |

| I'm so busy I can't even keep up with the playoffs, as long as the Oakland Raiders are losing by a landslide, I'm happy as can be, damn druggies and gang members! :) | |

| Don't pick on the Phillys...my husband is having a really good day! He's a PA transplant here in CA.
Philly Tax, with all due respect, lighten up. If you don't want to read or answer the question, then don't. No harm, no foul.

| Exactly. And if this isn't the place for you, then see ya. Tho' you're welcome to stick around and post and respond to the things that do appeal. | |

| You must be pretty unhappy tonight, Donniecasteman, since the Raiders stomped all over Miami today . . . . ;-} | |

| actually, I don't even drink, I just remembered my brother in law and his exwife went to a raiders game and had to leave because of all the violence in the stands, not a good team to be a fan of. | |

| Philly, how are we to know that you are a tax professional? I think at the very least, users should disclose their credentials on their profile. Then, leave it up to the users to decide to respond or not to non-professionals questions.
If it is obvious that a DIY'er is fishing for free advice, don't answer...or remind them to do a search if something that has already been answered. Keep in mind, it's the non-professionals who ask the questions that keep us professionals in business!

| "Free Online Tax Research Resource and Community for Tax Professionals". That is essentially what we are. The guy came here and noticed neither. How much can he actually know about taxation? | |

| Yup, gotta feel bad for the Mets fans...it's hard to imagine that after 160 games it all comes down to the final game. Kind of rooting for the Rockies today. I have no idea where they came from but they're a team I wouldn't want to face in the post-season. | |
Bottom Line (talk|edits) said: | 2 October 2007 |
| Philly Tax took a great deal of time to discuss what several of us have discussed numerous times. I don't believe it is possible to eliminate the non-professionals especially from a free site. We all have the choice to read or reply to each post based on our interest, time and knowledge. (Besides that, I enjoy seeing that I'm not the only one that attracts the idiots!) | |
