| I have a client who made a qualified job related move. Instead of paying storage and moving costs until he got settled in at his new location, he bought an old moving van trailer (you can pick them up dirt cheap used). He stored his stuff in it, and then had a buddy with a semi tractor bring it to his new home once he was ready to move in. (It's amazing what a buddy will do for free beer).
He wants to deduct the cost of the trailer as a moving expense. Any ideas? I could see a valid argument as a storage and transportation cost, but if he sold the trailer later wouldn't it be all gain as he had already deducted the cost? Deducting a capital expenditure as a moving expense just somehow seems wrong. Thanks | |
