| A client of mine lives in north CA but works in South CA. He flies almost every other week to work (to south CA); stays there 5 days at a hotel and fly back home to North CA. This arrangement has been going already 18 months.
He purchased a car in South CA to use when he drives from the hotel to the office. What is considered as commuting? Driving his first car in North CA from his house to the airport and back or driving the second car from the hotel to the office. Another important fact – his employer reimburses his gas expenses. Thanks so much Dadle

| Hmm, going on longer than a year, very routine, I'd almost have to say it's all commuting unless there's more to the story, such as whether or not he has another principal place of working in Northern Cal. That's just me of course. Without another place of work in Northern Cal, his tax home is the home of the rock band the Eagles, in Southern California. | |

| Donnie,
My thought process was that the alternative would have been using a taxi every day and get reimbursed by his employer. He was just saving money to the company. What do you think? Dadle

| If the expense belongs with the employer, the employee cannot choose to deduct it.
It would help if you would answer Donnie's question.

| His tax home and principal home may be different. It sounds as though his tax home is Southern CA - therefore no deduction anywhere. | |
