Now that proseries has issued the new source data entry system, I would be interested in hearing the reactions of persons who have installed it and are using it. Does it work? How difficult was it to install? etc. etc

Easy to install & get running. I used it the past couple of days for about 20 W-'s. It is not working very well. It can't handle some W-2's at all & on many W-2's it does not pick up the state witholding.

Not a time saver so far.

Spoke with a tech support guy last evening who was actually new something about Source Doc Auto-Entry & gave some honest answers. Told him I've scanned about 30 W-2's & maybe 4 were correct. He was not surprised. Basicly said this is about as good as it’s going to get for now even with the update that is coming. I said this may be a great product at some point but they came out with it too soon. He agreed. Nothing lost, I’ll ask for my money & move on.

Thanks for sharing that, Ct. Are you using the scanner sold by Intuit? I've been curious how this is working, even though I didn't buy the software and scanner.

Tim! I just entered the category for this discussion at the end of this message (within the message), and the preview shows the category listed below and not in this message. I have a macro for ctrl-F12 set up to enter the Tax Preparers category. Will this be a problem to add categories this way?

It shouldn't be a problem to enter categories that way. The only drawback to that method is finding them later to make modifications.

I am curious about the scanner too.

It doesn't make sense that Intuit would sell a product (scanner and software) that only works 13.33% of the time. And it seems like, if this is the case, more tax preparers, who are using this scanner and software, would have already posted messages relating to their problems in this forum.

Good point, Deb. I wonder how many were sold. I notice it has not been mentioned in those Proseries news bulletins I receive in my email, and usually there Proseries is pretty forthright if there is a problem.

What's bewildering to me is that the tech support guy told Cttax, "This is about as good as it’s going to get for now even with the update that is coming." And the support guy agreed to this statement by Cttax: "I said this may be a great product at some point but they came out with it too soon."

I've had support people express similar statements when the Public Traded Partnership issue came up in the past. It grieves them that the way to get the return to be done correctly is accepting that there will be an error message and therefore, it cannot be efiled. Of course the lure to Cttax's purchase may have been the scanner deal, but I'm not sure that price was not comparable to that found on the street. I would hope Proseries would renew that software for next year at no charge; it's like he is trying out the Beta.

I did buy the scanner (Fujitsu 5110) they recommended. Maybe I'm being a bit fussy, but I feel if scanning the W-2's is not 90% or more accurate, I can do it faster & more accurately myself. Apparently I'm not the only one who is dissatisfied.

and from the Lacerte (a sister company) bulliten board:

I'm being nice compared to some of the other comments.

There probably have not been a lot of posting because the software was only available this past Thursday (1/25).

Thanks for the links, Cttax. I wish I had enough time to read all the forums, but this one keeps me too busy and no time left to read the Intuit forums that I read last year. Just glad I didn't purchase the scanning software. I don't think I'll ever have a use for it, anyway, even if it worked 100%.

90%!!!! One check we do in my one preparer office is have the return processor re-add the W-2 forms, or verify the ones with one W-2, for totals of wages, FIT, State wages and SIT. With the old F--T who is doing the entering, I doubt there were more than 10 of 400+ that had to be redone last year, and I have some clients with over 20 wage forms.

Death&Taxes:

I'm NOT saying that my W-2's are 90% accurate, as they are damn close to 100%. I'm saying that the scanner needs to be 90% accurate before it's any kind of a time saver for me.

Death&Taxes (talk|edits) said:

I did not read you that way....I am saying I am not sure a 90% accuracy rate would be acceptable for scanned products.....I guess I can accept my own entry mistakes and the time it takes to find them [we begin by having her add them, and when something is wrong I print a W-2 report for her to compare to].....but to pay good money, I guess I would want almost total accuracy....I'd be willing to forgive the machinery for misreading hand written or lightly typed W-2s that every so often I see, but not those from ADP, Paychex etc.
