| Proseries is Terrible this year. I have been using it
for several years and haven't had any complaints. This year BIG problems. When you call for assistance, you get a message that the call will not be answered for 45 minutes! DMS keeps crashing and the EFILE updates don't work. The status of my efiled returns keep changing. I have to call daily to see if the returns were transmitted or not, since I can't tell from the homebase. I left a message to get a response from the Presidents callback line on Tuesday. As of today, no call.

We have had NO problems. We use the full package 5K worth and so far knock wood. We haven'r needed to call even once. What's been happening? Matt

| The only one I've had (don't use DMS) is that if you've not opened the file that day, it won't clear efiling...so you have to reopen it to transmit. Hoping that gets fixed soon.
Otherwise, just peeves. Like, why oh freakin' why can't they let have a 2nd printer icon? Some of us use, shocking, I know, MORE THAN ONE PRINTER! And to switch back and forth is about six mouse clicks. I'm also tired of saying, print, and having to acknowledge that it printed! I could on, but I have work to do.

| I had a few efile problems with communications last year. It turned out to be the my DSL modem security was set to high to communicate properly with the IRS. Are you a direct or provider filer. If you are direct then drop your security on the modem to NONE. Typical access to the modem is enter 192.168.0.1 in a web address. That pulls up the modem software. Generally the modem security (firewall) is under advanced option or set up. If you have a router in front of the modem you may have to change that. The internal firewall of XP or Office should not be an issue. You may want to check and see if the irs or your provider is on your softlist of your windows firewall. Hope this helps. | |

| I renewed my ProSeries today; hopefully no troubles this tax season. I vacillated between Drake, CS and ProSeries and went with Pro for another year. All my work so far this year has been negligent taxpayers from other years so we shall see.
I agree JR....you have to define a default printer in ProSeries instead of being able to toggle from one to another...oh well something for the designers to work out!

| The wait time this year has been really bad.....20 mins - 30 mins a pop....their is an on line chat option...but sometimes you just want to speak with a live body.
Hopefully, the wait time will decrease... I use DMS and it has crashed more this year than before.....especially when transferring files between the tax prep software and DMS. I plan to look at and likely switch to Ultra Tax next year.

I have the complete package as well. I run on a network and am having major problems with Efile. After we efile, the status usually just says "Ready to Efile", so we have no way to know if the return was transmitted. I was told they are working on a fix, but you know how that goes. My assistants are spending half their days trying to find out if the returns have gone through. Also, this is my 2nd year using DMS and it keeps locking up. Probably 3 or 4 times a day, I have to get out of the program and then get back in. I know these problems are not the end of the world, but for $5K, you think they'd fix them on a timely basis.

| Hopefully the update on 2/7 will fix the e-file problems. We have the same problem where e-file status changes after returns have been accepted; state returns are not correctly transmitted with the federal; with a conversion error message - have to file the state as state only after federal accepted; blank lines appear at the top of home base where the client name has disappeared.... It has been time consuming and frustrating at a time where we don't need additional frustration. Keeping our fingers crossed! | |

| Talk about weird. Today I did a simple return for a 25 year old son of a client. I finished the return, printed it & gave it to the client. I then efiled it while he was in my office. After he left I went to Starbucks. Upon return from Starbucks I remembered I had not printed a pdf copy of the return. When I tried to print the pdf copy, it went into "pay per return" mode and wanted me to approve a $17 charge. I called Pro Series tech support. While on the line I found the firm name on the bottom of the return was my former office-mate's firm name. Panic. I have called Intuit several times in the last year to let them know that Jim and Stan are two unrelated people who, at one time, shared a site license (Intuit did away with that about 5 years ago) to share Pro Series. They cannot seem to unhook us in their customer base. How his firm name showed up on my computer is a mystery! I then panicked thinking, how many returns have I printed that I didn't even notice had the wrong firm name. So I went into a return I printed yesterday and it was correct. The guy fixed my problem but when he asked the perfunctory question at the end of the call, "Have I resolved all of your concerns today?" I said, "No, you have resolved my problem but certainly you've left me very concerned." Apparently I am not the only one who has experienced this problem. | |

| My pet peeve is the fact that ProSeries doesn't automatically import data from siblings for calculation of Kiddie tax. It's a super chore when there are 3 or so children, to add up all of the cap gains etc for all of the siblings manually.
I've complained about this many times. It kind of cracks me up, however, when complaints about program bugs are referred to as enhancement requests. (When I have to fix an error on a tax return, I sometimes refer to the correction return as "Version 2")

| Every year I say this is the last. Right after tax season I'm contacting Drake and making the change. I detest ProSeries, mostly because it's an Intuit product and way overpriced. Over $3,000 a year for a one person firm, stinks. And, I'll never, ever, ever get use to or comfortable with speaking to someone in a foreign country with an accent so strong I can barely understand them and vice versa. Jim, I've learned the hard way that once your name/firm is connected in any way, shape or form, it is virtually impossible to 'dis' connect. How in the world can that be so difficult? It's a major concern when they cannot even handle something so simple and having to call over and over and over again about the exact same problem is reprehensible. A little off topic, I'm still having a problem with QB and their fixed asset manager and NO ONE will give me an answer. Thousands of dollars every year and I have reinput 100's of assets. Saturday morning rant! | |

| You guys scare me! I rarely if ever would call tech support in tax season, but I am fortunate that 99% of my clients are not seeking a refund before the groundhog sticks his head up, so by the time I am transmitting many of the problems have been worked out. I also find that, assuming there is no problem in system operation, but rather in software function, the time spent waiting on the phone is better used trying to work through the software, using right click mouse strokes to cross reference and reading the about keys.
Usually you find the answer is "You can't get to there from here." Try doing the 8582-CR for low income housing on specific real estate on E Worksheets where there is more than one property, and there are carryovers. You will find at least one worksheet that goes nowhere. Or entering K-1s from Goldman Sachs partnerships where the categories never fit the K-1 worksheet. Oddly Intuit keeps putting lines about REMIC but I've never seen REMICs on these K-1s, only 988 gains and losses etc. That being said, yesterday I had to do a 2000 return, a simple one W-2, married return. I looked at my old laptop but that only went back to 2001. I was not about to haul out a monitor and hook up the old Windows 98 desktop, but I have the installation disks. Then I thought about it; that disk is licensed to Death & Taxes, but in Valatie NY, not Ocean Gate NJ and I could not imagine trying to get someone to change this, whether that person be in Fredericksburg, Manila or Bangalore. So I went to IRS.gov and printed out a 1040, page one and two, and the charts for the approximate taxable income and did it by hand.

| I am grateful for you 'early adopters'. Like DT, I don't start efiling much until the last couple days. W2's first, then corp/LLC's and the few early 1040's. So it's been pretty much biz as usual so far, and by next week, updates will fix most of the aggravations. | |

| Does anyone else find entering a 1098T to suddenly be a hassle this year? It took 2 of us nearly 30 minutes to figure out how to go through all the worksheets to enter a simple number that we used to just calculate in our heads (tuition minus grants). I don't consider this an 'enhancement'. It ranks right up there with HSA's now... | |

| 1098Ts and the like seem to be imported from Turbo Tax. I also find the new improved Schedule D a pain and go to the simpler entry method, which I never use except for long lists. And one thing that bugs me is that unlike Lacerte, the process on putting HELOC interest on the 6251 is ass-backward....in Proseries you begin with the 6251; as I recall the last time I saw Lacerte, you begin on Sch A, which is much more intuitive. We complain sometimes that the posters here seem to have little understanding of basic taxes, but functions like this do not help. | |

| On the 1098-T and 1099-Misc entry forms <for Sch C>, Do you always enter them in the form? I ususally just bypass and enter as if we received no 1099.
Aren't those there just for our tracking purposes? Total amount correct. bypass the PIA input screens.
| 11 February 2008 | |
| I could not figure out a way to enter the 1098 info without doing an override. I know it's silly, but I have a hangup about overrides. I feel like I'm doing it wrong if I have to override a value. | |
