If IRS rejects an e-filed 1040, what is the process for paper filing and showing that the return had been timely submitted? (The reason for the rejection is that IRS records aren't up to date with a newly acquired EIN for household employees; that is, the e-filed return was correct.)

Don't know -- call IRS

Stick a note on it with some acknowledgement number and be done with it.

From personal experience:
  • Address envelope to IRS
  • Insert return in envelope
  • Moisten adhesive on envelope flap
  • Place postage on envelope
  • Drop envelope in mailbox

What error does the review give you?

Lhhesscpa--really side-splittingly funny--missing the point, but cute.

Taxea--the review doesn't give an error--the review is fine. The IRS's records don't match a newly acquired EIN.

There must be a proc. or a notice or something to show proof of timely submission.

Glad to entertain you, Frank. Yet I'm also being quite serious. I've gotten uncurable e-file rejections that required paper filing. My clients just mailed them. No extra effort or explanation was needed. They were processed without a hitch. The reason: the IRS treats a rejected return as not ever filed. All except that they consider the electronic postmark the filing date when the rejection takes place before the due date and the paper return is postmarked within 5 days after the due date. -- Larry Hess, CPA | Albuquerque, NM

I had this situation with a corporate extension and I was advised by the IRS to attach a copy of the efile reject notice as proof of timely filing, so that is how I handled it.
